Bungie is about to open Marathon’s doors to everyone, and you do not need a pre-order, a sign-up, or an invite to walk through them. The Marathon Server Slam runs from February 26 to March 2, 2026, it is completely free to join on PC and console, and it carries real rewards that carry over to the full game launch on March 5. Whether you want to try Marathon before you commit, earn a headstart cache of gear for launch, or just watch some streams and grab Twitch Drops from your sofa, this guide covers every confirmed detail from Bungie.

What Is the Marathon Server Slam?

The Marathon Server Slam is an open preview weekend hosted by Bungie ahead of Marathon’s full launch on March 5, 2026. It is not a typical closed beta or invite-only event. Anyone can join by downloading the free Server Slam build from Steam, the PlayStation Store, or the Microsoft Store once it goes live in their region. No codes, no pre-orders, and no prior sign-ups are required.

The event serves two purposes simultaneously. For Bungie, it is a technical stress test designed to push Marathon’s global server infrastructure at full scale for the very first time before launch. For players, it is a hands-on preview of the game with tangible rewards waiting on the other side.

This preview is also part of Steam Next Fest, giving even more visibility to the upcoming launch and letting players dive in alongside other demos during the event window.

What Can You Actually Play During the Server Slam?

The Server Slam gives you a meaningful slice of Marathon’s launch content, though it is not the full game. Here is exactly what Bungie has confirmed as available during the weekend.

Two additional zones, Outpost and Cryo Archive, arrive with the full launch and Season 1 on March 5.

Factions and Contracts

You can take on early contracts for five of Marathon’s six launch factions: CyberAcme, NuCaloric, Traxus, MIDA, and Arachne. Early faction levels and progression trees for each of these five factions are accessible throughout the weekend.

Runner Shells

Five of the six launch Runner Shells are playable during the Server Slam: Assassin, Destroyer, Recon, Triage, and Vandal. The free scavenger experience Rook is also available. The sixth shell, Thief, is not available during the Server Slam and arrives with the full launch.

To level up your Runner Level during the event, focus on completing contracts and missions within the available zones. These activities grant experience that contributes to your overall Runner Level progression, unlocking higher-tier Arrival Cache rewards at milestones like Level 10 and Level 30.

Server Slam Rewards: What You Earn for Launch Day

Your Server Slam progression does not carry over to the full game, but the loot rewards you bank during the weekend do. Everyone who completes the introductory mission also earns exclusive cosmetic rewards that mark them as a first-wave Runner.

Cosmetic Rewards for All Participants

Complete the introductory mission during the Server Slam and you unlock two exclusive cosmetics delivered at launch:

  • Beta.exe Emblem
  • Complex Study Player Background

Both are exclusive to Server Slam participants and will not be available after the event ends.

Marathon Twitch Drops: Watch and Earn During Server Slam

You do not need to play Marathon to earn rewards during the Server Slam weekend. Bungie has set up Twitch Drops so that watching any Marathon stream during the event earns you cosmetics for launch. Here is how it works and what you can earn.

What to Expect: Queues, Bugs, and Downtime

Bungie is transparent that the Server Slam will not run as smoothly as the full launch. The entire point of the event is to stress the servers, which means instability is expected and intentional. Here is what Bungie has confirmed players should be prepared for:

Possible IssueDetails
Login queuesEspecially likely during peak hours across all regions
Disconnects and error codesExpected throughout the weekend
Short-notice server maintenanceBungie may bring servers down without much warning to address issues

Bungie will monitor the event actively and post status updates through the Marathon Official Discord, @MarathonDevTeam on Twitter and Bluesky, and the Bungie Server Status page. If something breaks during your session, those are the right places to check. Since the event is now live as of February 26, head to these channels for any real-time updates on server status, downtime, or fixes.

Can You Preload the Marathon Server Slam?

No. Bungie confirmed through the official Marathon Discord that preloading is not available for the Server Slam. The decision was made specifically to reduce the load on servers during the initial go-live window. You will need to download the Server Slam build from your platform storefront when the event starts in your region.

However, preloading will be available for Marathon’s full launch on March 5, so you will not face the same situation when it matters most.
