The world of Dutton Ranch is preparing for a major shift, and it is one that could redefine the future of the hit Yellowstone spin-off. While Season 1 introduced viewers to Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler’s new life in South Texas, the series is now moving toward a broader ensemble approach—and one veteran actor is set to benefit the most.
Ed Harris, who joined the Paramount+ drama as Everett McKinney, is expected to receive significantly more screen time in Season 2. According to stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, the upcoming season will place Everett at the heart of the story, making him one of the show’s central figures alongside Beth, Rip, Beulah Jackson, and Carter.
With a new showrunner, returning villains, and deeper character conflicts on the horizon, Everett’s expanded presence could become one of Season 2’s defining storylines.
Why Ed Harris’ Everett McKinney Will Play a Much Bigger Role in Dutton Ranch Season 2

Season 1 of Dutton Ranch premiered in 2026 on Paramount+ and quickly became a major success, delivering a record-breaking debut that earned an early Season 2 renewal. The series follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they relocate to a new ranch in South Texas with Carter (Finn Little).
The show also introduced acclaimed actors Annette Bening and Ed Harris, adding another layer of prestige to the expanding Yellowstone universe.
Although Everett McKinney appeared throughout the first season, Kelly Reilly revealed that audiences have only seen the beginning of his journey.
Speaking about the direction of the next season, Reilly said:
“I think Season 2 is going to feel very much more Ed’s show… This is not the Beth and Rip show. This is Dutton Ranch, and there’s four lead characters, five [including Carter]. Annette Bening and Ed Harris… We’re very proud to be working with them.”
She also credited both Harris and Bening with elevating the series beyond a “soapy spinoff” into a serious drama.
Cole Hauser echoed that enthusiasm, explaining that Everett was intentionally introduced gradually.
He said Everett will be “a very important, integral part of Season 2,” praising Harris as an “amazing American actor” who was “used very sparingly this year” but will feature more prominently alongside the core cast.
Who Is Everett McKinney in Dutton Ranch?
Everett McKinney is a weathered Vietnam War Navy veteran and the local veterinarian in the Rio Paloma area.
His compassion for animals, dry sense of humor, and calm personality make him a trusted ally for Beth and Rip. However, Everett also carries emotional baggage through his complicated, on-again, off-again romance with Beulah Jackson, played by Annette Bening.
Beulah is a powerful and cunning ranch head whose business dealings place her at the center of increasingly dangerous conflicts.
Throughout Season 1, Everett helps uncover elements of Beulah’s drug-smuggling operations and the growing cartel tensions involving Mariano Reyes, portrayed by Raoul Trujillo. As the season progresses, both the criminal investigation and Everett’s relationship with Beulah become increasingly complicated, leaving their future uncertain by the finale.
Season 2 Will Shift Toward an Ensemble Story

Rather than focusing exclusively on Beth and Rip, Season 2 is expected to expand its storytelling across multiple lead characters.
Everett’s close friendship with Beth and Rip, combined with his emotional ties to Beulah, naturally places him in the middle of the show’s biggest conflicts.
The ensemble cast will continue navigating cartel threats, including the return of Mariano Reyes and his son Joaquin, while also facing new family and business challenges that continue to reshape the Texas ranching landscape.
Ed Harris Brings Award-Winning Experience to the Yellowstone Universe
Ed Harris arrived in Dutton Ranch with one of the most respected careers in Hollywood.
The multiple Oscar-nominated actor and Golden Globe and BAFTA winner is widely known for performances in Apollo 13, The Truman Show, Westworld, and Pollock, which he also directed.
His casting alongside Annette Bening, announced around 2025, immediately added prestige to the Yellowstone franchise. Harris reportedly even replaced or adapted elements such as the cowboy hat associated with his Westworld days for Everett McKinney.
