Habitat Restoration is one of the most rewarding systems in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, and once it clicks, it completely changes how you build your party. By releasing Monsties back into the wild, you raise Ecosystem Ranks, unlock Mutations, attract Endangered Species, and start pulling Dual-Element eggs that would otherwise be impossible to find. Here is everything you need to know to master it.
How to Unlock Habitat Restoration
Habitat Restoration unlocks during Chapter 6 of Act 1, the Endangered Species mission. This is also where the game introduces Invasive Monsters and Endangered Species, both of which tie directly into the system.

However, before you can use Habitat Restoration in any specific area, you first need to establish a camp there by defeating the Feral Monster that controls that region. Feral Monsters appear on the map as red icons and glow with blue powder-like energy. Defeating one unlocks the camp and activates Habitat Restoration for that area only.
How Habitat Restoration Works: Step by Step
| Step | Action |
| Step 1 | Defeat the Feral Monster in the area to unlock the camp and Habitat Restoration for that zone |
| Step 2 | Visit Monster Dens and collect multiple eggs, ideally of the same species or element |
| Step 3 | Hatch the eggs at your base and level up the Monsties before releasing them |
| Step 4 | Return to the camp and release Monsties via the Habitat Restoration menu |
| Step 5 | Watch the Ecosystem Rank climb and return regularly to farm increasingly potent eggs |
Note that each area has a restoration slot limit of 5 unique Monstie species. Additionally, once you release a Monstie, you cannot retrieve it, so plan your releases carefully.
What Are the Benefits of Raising Ecosystem Ranks?
Higher Ecosystem Ranks directly improve the quality of everything you find in that area. The benefits stack as the rank increases through the grades from B up to the top tier:
- Eggs become easier to obtain and Monsties hatch at slightly higher levels
- Monsties can hatch with Environment Skills specific to that area, which do not take up space on the gene board. At S-Rank, all three Environment Skills can appear
- Monsties can hatch with S-Rank Genes when the Ecosystem Rank reaches S
- That monster species starts appearing in the field, allowing you to battle and collect its parts
- At Ecosystem Rank A or higher, Monsties can hatch with a second element depending on the area, changing their colour and boosting attack power with that element
- A secondary element also grants an Egg Skill based on that element, which you can transfer to other Monsties via the Rite of Channeling

Dual-Element Monsties Explained
When you introduce a Monstie to a habitat and its Ecosystem Rank reaches A or higher, there is a chance that eggs in that area hatch a Dual-Element Monstie. For example, introducing a Tobi-Kadachi to a Fire element area can produce a red-coloured Tobi-Kadachi with both Thunder and Fire elements.
Dual-Element Monsties gain the following advantages:
- Skills matching the new secondary element deal stronger damage
- They hatch with a special Egg Skill tied to the secondary element
- The Egg Skill can be transferred to other Monsties using the Rite of Channeling
- Their original Kinship Skill stays unchanged
You can preview all possible Dual-Element versions of any monster in the Monsterpedia by selecting the monster and cycling through the Change Element option, even before you have encountered one.
How to Unlock Endangered Monsters and Mutations
Endangered Monsters are species no longer found naturally in any area. You obtain their eggs by defeating Invasive Monsters, which unlocks an Endangered Den containing that species’ egg.
Mutations are rare variants that appear only when you meet specific conditions within a habitat. The Monsterpedia provides clues about each mutation’s requirements.

Tips for Faster Ecosystem Rank Farming
- Release higher-level Monsties rather than freshly hatched ones, as levelled Monsties contribute more to the Ecosystem Rank
- Release Monsties of the same species or element to activate a multiplier that speeds up rank progression
- Use Eco Conservation on any Monstie you want to protect from accidental removal, especially Endangered Species
- Farm Retreat Dens (the green glowing dens) for the best gene odds on eggs
- Always keep at least one egg of each Endangered Species in reserve to prevent permanent loss
- In Act 2, the Excursions feature allows you to send an existing Monstie to another region to gain that region’s bonuses without changing the Monstie’s element
Habitat Restoration is the backbone of long-term progression in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection. The more time you invest in building up Ecosystem Ranks, the stronger and more diverse your Monstie roster becomes, and unlocking rare Mutations and Dual-Element powerhouses makes every hour of farming genuinely rewarding.
