Capcom Confirms Final Development Stage and Next Announcement
In Weekly Oni Memo #36, director Nihei shared the following message with fans following the recent Capcom Spotlight presentation:

This is the most concrete signal yet that a release date reveal or major new information is imminent. The team has already selected the next venue for unveiling new information and is actively preparing for that announcement, though no specific event or date has been confirmed yet.
New Area Revealed: The Underground Laboratory
Alongside the final development confirmation, Nihei also introduced a brand new location called the Underground Laboratory. Here is what Capcom shared about it:
“This is a research facility built by the Formidable Foe Dokyo, beneath the heart of Kyoto, designed to create new Genmas. We have designed this stage with the feel of a traditional Japanese haunted house in mind. The shadows cast on the shoji screens look rather eerie.”
The Underground Laboratory adds to the growing list of confirmed locations in the game, which also includes a meticulously recreated Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Capcom obtained official permission from the temple’s responsible personnel to feature it in the game and verified development details with them throughout the process. While the team matched elements like the actual number of pillars supporting the stage, they also made deliberate adjustments to ensure enjoyable gameplay rather than strict architectural accuracy.
Story and Setting
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set in the Edo period and introduces a brand new protagonist, Miyamoto Musashi, a samurai who finds himself wielding the legendary Oni Gauntlet. His mission centres on slaying demons known as Genma, fiends described as coming from the lowest depths of Hell and manifesting as Malice.
The story unfolds across a version of Kyoto twisted by malevolent clouds of Malice, blending dark fantasy with the eerie folklore of historic Japan. Producer Kadowaki noted that Kyoto’s occult history was a key inspiration from the very beginning of the project, with Kiyomizu-dera Temple serving as the prototype map created at the start of development.
The team is targeting a main story length of approximately 20 hours, though Capcom has clarified this is an estimation and not yet finalised.
Gameplay Mechanics Confirmed So Far

Capcom has been steadily detailing the combat system through the Weekly Oni Memo series. Here is a breakdown of everything confirmed:
| Mechanic | Details |
| Oni Gauntlet | Core mechanic returning from the original series; absorbs enemy souls mid-battle to restore health and unleash special moves |
| Issen | High-damage precision strike with a strict timing window |
| Break Issen | Triggered when an enemy’s Stamina Gauge is fully depleted; easier timing than standard Issen; players choose which body part to target |
| Break Issen Targeting | Red marker deals large health damage; purple marker releases a large number of souls |
| Stamina Gauge | Represents the connection between an enemy’s soul and body; depleting it causes the enemy to lose balance |
| Katana Deflection | Players can choose the direction of deflecting attacks; enemies respond accordingly, raising the skill ceiling significantly |
| One-on-One Duels | Confirmed combat scenario type alongside group encounters |
| Environmental Interactions | Additional combat layers through the environment |
| Counterattacks | Confirmed as part of the core combat system |
Additionally, the game features a confirmed clash between protagonist Musashi and Ganryu, described as a clash of gauntlets, hinting at a significant rival encounter within the story.
What Fans Are Saying
Community reaction to the final development confirmation has been overwhelmingly positive. Players who got their hands on the demo praised the depth of the combat system, with one notable comment highlighting how the directional katana deflection system creates a high skill ceiling with meaningful enemy responses. Many long-time fans of the original trilogy, particularly Onimusha 1 through 3, have expressed excitement that the new entry appears to capture the tone and quality of those early entries rather than the more divisive Dawn of Dreams.

Capcom’s current lineup, which includes Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword all arriving in 2026, has drawn widespread praise from the gaming community as one of the strongest single-year publisher lineups in recent memory.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches in 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. A release date announcement is expected at the next confirmed venue, which Capcom has yet to name publicly. Add it to your Steam wishlist now to stay updated.
