ABC’s hit procedural dramedy High Potential has become one of television’s biggest breakout successes, making its unexpected absence from the network’s fall 2026 lineup one of the year’s most surprising scheduling decisions. After dominating both traditional television ratings and streaming, many viewers expected the series to return on its usual schedule. Instead, ABC has pushed the next season into 2027.
The announcement immediately raised questions about whether something had gone wrong behind the scenes. However, the latest developments tell a very different story. Rather than signaling trouble, new production updates suggest the creative team is already laying the groundwork for the show’s return, even months before its expected premiere.

High Potential stars Kaitlin Olson as Morgan Gillory, a brilliant but unconventional single mother who partners with LAPD detectives to solve crimes. The series is an American adaptation of the French show HPI. Since premiering in fall 2024, it has established itself as one of ABC’s strongest performers, consistently delivering impressive ratings on both linear television and streaming while frequently leading—or ranking near the top—in key demographic categories.
Despite that momentum, ABC confirmed in May 2026, during the unveiling of its 2026–2027 fall schedule, that High Potential Season 3 would not premiere in fall 2026. Instead, the network is holding the series for midseason, with its return expected in January 2027 or early 2027.
ABC executive Ari Goldman, Senior Vice President of Content Strategy and Scheduling, explained that the decision was entirely strategic. The network wants the series to enjoy an uninterrupted run of episodes from midseason through the end of the television season, following a scheduling model that has worked successfully for shows such as The Rookie and Will Trent. The strategy is designed to provide greater consistency for both broadcast and streaming audiences.
Although the announcement surprised many viewers because of the show’s exceptional performance, ABC has framed the move as a vote of confidence in the series’ ability to attract audiences later in the season. The network also plans to heavily promote the show’s return closer to its premiere.
The scheduling shift also reshapes ABC’s broader lineup. Alongside High Potential, other midseason returns include The Rookie, Will Trent, and the new series The Rookie: North. During the fall 2026 season, R.J. Decker will occupy the Tuesday 10 p.m. time slot previously held by High Potential.
Despite the longer wait, production has already moved ahead. In early July 2026, actor Matthew Lamb, who plays Elliot, Morgan’s son, shared an Instagram post revealing that the Season 3 writers’ room was already active. He also expressed excitement about working with the show’s new creative leadership.

Taking over are sisters Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, who have been appointed co-showrunners and executive producers. One major change, however, involves Steve Howey. After Season 2’s dramatic cliffhanger in which Captain Nick Wagner was stabbed, Howey will leave the series as a regular cast member. Resolving that storyline is expected to be among Season 3’s earliest priorities, alongside continuing Morgan’s family dynamics, evolving relationships, and the procedural investigations that have defined the show.
