Firehouse 51 barely has time to recover from the chaos of the Chicago Fire Season 14 finale before another major shakeup begins. Season 15 opens with the fate of several firefighters hanging in the balance — and then delivers an even bigger change for longtime viewers.
Joe Miñoso is leaving Chicago Fire after 14 seasons as Joe Cruz, while Dermot Mulroney’s Dom Pascal is also heading out. But neither exit happens in exactly the same way. One unfolds almost immediately, while the other stretches across the opening episodes as Firehouse 51 welcomes a new generation of firefighters.
Chicago Fire Season 15 Picks Up After the Explosive Finale
The Season 14 finale left Firehouse 51 in an incredibly dangerous position.
Cruz, Christopher Herrmann, Stella Kidd, Kelly Severide and Mouch were among the firefighters responding to a massive warehouse fire when the situation suddenly escalated. An explosion put numerous members of the team in danger, leaving their immediate fates unresolved as the season came to an end.
Season 15 doesn’t simply jump ahead.
The premiere, titled “New Blood,” deals directly with the aftermath of the warehouse-fire cliffhanger while beginning the process of reshaping Firehouse 51.
New showrunner Victor Teran has made clear that the danger seen in the finale was very real.
“Everyone was not just in danger; they were in extreme danger,” Teran told TV Insider.
That sets up a premiere where the consequences of the fire matter — but the biggest surprises are not limited to who survives the emergency.
Another Major TV Cast Shakeup
Joe Cruz’s departure is part of a wider Chicago Fire cast transition as longtime characters make way for new faces at Firehouse 51. For another recent television cast shakeup involving established stars and new additions, see our SNL Season 52 cast shake-up report.
Joe Cruz’s Chicago Fire Exit Will Take Several Episodes
For viewers who have watched Chicago Fire since its beginning, one departure will carry particular weight.
Joe Miñoso has portrayed Joe Cruz since the show’s 2012 debut. Over 14 seasons, Cruz became one of Firehouse 51’s core characters and a foundational member of the team.
Now, his story is coming to an end.
Miñoso will not disappear from the series immediately. He is expected to appear in several Season 15 episodes before Cruz’s departure takes place. Peacock’s current series information confirms that Miñoso remains part of the Season 15 cast as the character approaches his exit.
That makes Cruz’s departure a storyline rather than a simple absence from the premiere.
His Season 15 journey also begins after an enormous personal and professional upheaval.
Cruz was among the firefighters caught in the Season 14 structure-fire disaster, while he and his wife, Chloe, had also learned that they were expecting twins.
For a character who has been part of Firehouse 51 since the show’s first season, there is a lot riding on how his final storyline unfolds.
Brandon Larracuente Teases a “Wonderful Sendoff” for Joe Miñoso
Miñoso’s departure has already had an emotional impact behind the scenes.
Brandon Larracuente, who joined Chicago Fire as Sal Vasquez during Season 14 and returns for Season 15, spoke about what it will be like to lose a longtime member of the cast.
“[That goodbye] was difficult. I’ve only known Joe for the past one and a half seasons, but when you come into this universe of Chicago, but Chicago Fire specifically, they really embrace you,” he told TV Insider.
Larracuente continued:
“I felt a part of the cast within weeks, maybe less than that. So, to not have that presence on set every day, there’s going to be a definite void, but I hope that we see more of Joe.”
In the interview cited by NJ.com, Larracuente also teased what fans can expect from Miñoso’s farewell.
“I think the fans will really appreciate that,” Larracuente told The TV Cave in September. “He deserves it; he’s been here for the past 15 years. He’s a core element, like a foundational member of the firehouse.”
He also highlighted the relationships within Firehouse 51 and how those bonds become particularly important after tragedy.
“I think the beauty of things like this is that despite a big tragedy, at the end of the call when things finally die down, seeing the camaraderie and seeing how they lean on each other and seeing just the sense of teamwork and the familial feel that comes with the firehouse, I think that’s the most important part, is knowing that we were all there for each other. I think that’s one of the most crucial things that we’ll see this year.”
For Cruz, the goodbye is not just the loss of another character. It marks the departure of one of the show’s original Firehouse 51 figures.
Dermot Mulroney’s Dom Pascal Is Leaving Much Sooner
While Cruz’s exit unfolds over several episodes, Dom Pascal’s story is coming to an end much faster.
Dermot Mulroney joined Chicago Fire in Season 13 as Dominic “Dom” Pascal. He entered the Firehouse 51 leadership structure after Eamonn Walker’s Wallace Boden moved away from his full-time role on the series.
Pascal’s tenure has now reached its conclusion.
During an August appearance at Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention, Mulroney confirmed that he would only appear in one Season 15 episode.
“This season, sadly, I have one episode. I finish on Tuesday and they write the character off,” Mulroney said.
The actor also reflected on his two seasons with the drama:
“We gave it our all for two seasons. They wrote an incredible storyline that put me as, an actor, in high challenge.”
Peacock currently confirms that Mulroney appears in one Season 15 episode, meaning Pascal’s storyline will be wrapped up in the Season 15 premiere.
His exit follows a complicated Season 14 storyline. Mulroney temporarily stepped away from the series during the season, with Rob Morgan’s Andre Hopkins filling the leadership position at Firehouse 51. Mulroney later returned for the Season 14 finale.
The Season 14 Cliffhanger Is Connected to Pascal’s Exit
The warehouse-fire cliffhanger isn’t simply there to create suspense around the firefighters’ survival.
According to Larracuente, the events of that cliffhanger also factor into Pascal’s departure.
“a lot of [it being] contingent on what happens in the cliffhanger that we saw in season 14,” Larracuente said. “And that, based on what happens in that cliffhanger, determines his exit.”
That gives the opening episode another layer. Viewers are waiting to discover what happened to the firefighters trapped in the dangerous warehouse situation, while the consequences also help determine what happens to Pascal.
Chicago Fire Season 15 Brings in Two New Firefighter Candidates
As Firehouse 51 says goodbye to established characters, it is also preparing for new arrivals.
Da’Vinchi joins Season 15 as Marcus, a firefighter candidate. The actor is known for his work in BMF and All American and joins the series as a new regular presence.
Matthew Daddario also enters the Chicago Fire world as McCaffrey, another firefighter candidate. Current Season 15 cast information lists Daddario as a guest star in the premiere.
The new characters are part of the show’s introduction of another generation of firefighters.
The Season 15 premiere description specifically says Firehouse 51 will “welcome a new crop of probies into the fold” while dealing with the aftermath of the warehouse fire.
That means the series is effectively rebuilding while its existing team is still dealing with the consequences of what happened.
Which Chicago Fire Stars Are Returning for Season 15?
Despite the major exits, Firehouse 51 is far from empty.
Taylor Kinney returns as Kelly Severide, David Eigenberg returns as Christopher Herrmann, and Christian Stolte reprises Randall “Mouch” McHolland.
Miranda Rae Mayo is back as Stella Kidd, Hanako Greensmith returns as Violet Mikami, and Jocelyn Hudon returns as Lyla Novak.
Larracuente is also back as Sal Vasquez.
Peacock’s current Season 15 information lists Kinney, Eigenberg, Stolte, Mayo, Greensmith, Hudon, Larracuente, Da’Vinchi and Miñoso among the cast.
Miñoso and Mulroney remain connected to the beginning of the season because their exits are being handled through the opening storyline rather than taking place before the premiere.
Chicago Fire Has a New Showrunner for Season 15
There is another major change that viewers won’t necessarily see on screen.
Andrea Newman has departed Chicago Fire after Season 14, ending a 14-year chapter with the series. Victor Teran has taken over as showrunner for Season 15.
Newman joined the series after its pilot as a co-executive producer. She later became an executive producer and eventually took over as sole showrunner.
When her departure was announced, Newman said:
“Working at ‘Chicago Fire,’ with the absolute best cast and crew in the business, has been the highlight of my career. Like so many others, I was inspired to get into TV writing because of Dick [Wolf], so what a thrill it’s been to work with him and the amazing Wolf team of Peter Jankowski, Rebecca McGill and Anastasia Puglisi. I’m so grateful to them, Derek Haas and the NBC and Universal execs who have been so supportive of the show all along the way. After 14 years, you really do become a family and working with this group will always feel like home.”
Teran therefore begins his run as showrunner at the same time the series loses two established cast members and introduces new firefighters.

Peacock’s official Chicago Fire page confirms that Season 15 premieres Oct. 7 at 9/8c and that new episodes will stream the following day. It also specifically identifies Joe Miñoso and Dermot Mulroney as the Season 15 departures, with Miñoso returning for a few episodes and Mulroney appearing in one episode to conclude Pascal’s story.
Why Chicago Fire Season 15 Could Be a Major Turning Point
Season 15 is arriving with several changes happening at once.
The immediate priority is the Season 14 cliffhanger. Firehouse 51 must deal with the aftermath of a warehouse explosion that left Cruz, Herrmann, Stella, Severide and Mouch among those in extreme danger.
Then comes Pascal’s final episode.
After that, Cruz’s departure will unfold over several episodes, bringing an end to Joe Miñoso’s 14-season run as one of the show’s foundational characters.
At the same time, Marcus and McCaffrey are being introduced as firefighter candidates, while the returning Firehouse 51 team continues forward.
And with Victor Teran replacing Andrea Newman as showrunner, the changes extend from the firehouse floor to the creative leadership behind the series.
For longtime viewers, Miñoso’s exit is likely to be the most significant emotional shift. Cruz has been part of Chicago Fire since its 2012 debut, making his eventual farewell a major moment for the drama.
The Season 15 premiere therefore has more than one question to answer. Who survived the warehouse fire? What happens to Dom Pascal? And how will Firehouse 51 move forward when one of its foundational members is preparing to leave?
Another Season Premiere Brings Major Changes
Season premieres can also mark major turning points when familiar characters leave and a show’s direction changes. For another breakdown of a major television season premiere and its family fallout, explore our Sister Wives Season 21 premiere breakdown.
Conclusion
Chicago Fire Season 15 begins with Firehouse 51 facing the consequences of its most dangerous recent cliffhanger — but the bigger story is what happens after the immediate crisis.
Dermot Mulroney’s Dom Pascal will leave in the Season 15 premiere, while Joe Miñoso’s Joe Cruz will remain for several episodes before departing after 14 seasons. New firefighter candidates Marcus and McCaffrey are arriving, familiar members of Firehouse 51 are returning, and Victor Teran is taking over as showrunner following Andrea Newman’s departure.
The result is a season built around change: one chapter closing, another beginning, and Firehouse 51 forced to keep moving forward.
