The final moments of a techno rave in Aarau, Switzerland, turned into a deadly nightmare early Sunday, August 30, when gunfire erupted as the event was winding down. More than a day later, investigators made a major breakthrough. Aargau Cantonal Police said a 43-year-old Swiss man was detained shortly before 1 a.m. on Monday, August 31, and arrested on strong suspicion of involvement in the shooting. Aarau rave shooting leaves one dead and five injured as police launch major search
Police were alerted at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday after several shots were fired near the horse-racing track during “Aarau Rave VOL. 7,” a techno event that was already coming to an end.
According to Aargau Cantonal Police, visitors were preparing to leave when an unidentified person fired several shots at a group of people. The 22-year-old woman suffered critical injuries and died at the scene despite resuscitation attempts.
Five additional victims were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to severe. Police later identified the deceased as a 22-year-old Italian woman. The injured victims included a German national and four Swiss men aged between 24 and 31.
Earlier reports had described the injured group as four men and one woman aged between 24 and 27 and said they were residents of Switzerland.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni later identified the woman as Maria Spinelli and said two of the injured victims were also Italian citizens.
“I express my deepest condolences for the death of Maria Spinelli, the young Italian woman who was a victim of the tragic shooting in Aarau, Switzerland,” Meloni wrote on X.
“My thoughts also go to the other injured individuals, among whom there are two Italian citizens, and to all the people involved in this dramatic event,” she added, saying she trusted “the work of the Swiss authorities to shed full light on what happened and identify those responsible.”
The shooting immediately prompted a huge emergency response involving police, firefighters and ambulances. Authorities cordoned off a substantial area around the racecourse and urged people to stay away while investigators searched for evidence.
The search even extended into neighbouring Germany, with police in Freiburg reportedly assisting efforts to locate the suspected shooter. Authorities also appealed to witnesses who had taken photographs or recorded videos during the rave to hand the material to investigators.
At one point, police said they had no indication where the suspected shooter was. Aargau police spokesperson Bernhard Graser described the scale of the operation as exceptional.
“Right now, virtually the entire Aargau police force is out on the streets,” Graser said.
The manhunt continued throughout Sunday before police announced the arrest early Monday. The 43-year-old Swiss man was detained shortly before 1 a.m. on August 31 and arrested on strong suspicion of being responsible.
His identity has not been publicly released, and authorities have not disclosed the evidence linking him to the shooting.

Ravegoers mistook gunshots for fireworks as panic spread
The shooting happened while large numbers of people were still around the venue. Swiss newspaper Blick reported that some attendees initially believed the sounds were fireworks before someone shouted, “everyone down.”
Those remaining at the event were later moved to a nearby gymnasium, where police questioned many as potential witnesses. Investigators also searched for recordings that could help reconstruct the moments before and after the shooting.
The incident shocked both the event organizers and the local racing club operating the venue.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to all those affected and their families, who are facing this difficult and trying situation,” the Aargau Racing Club said.
The club also thanked emergency responders and others who worked at the scene.
Swiss DJ Tekibo, who performed at the rave, reacted on Instagram:
“what happened at Aarauer rave is absolutely heartbreaking.”
“Techno and raves are supposed to be a place for freedom and safety, never a place where something like this happens,” he added.
Police say motive remains unknown as suspect faces investigation
One of the biggest unanswered questions remains why the shooting happened. Police initially said they had no information explaining the gunfire, while authorities also had not established whether one person or several people were involved.
When Graser was asked about the possibility of terrorism, he said the circumstances did not immediately point in that direction.
“The manhunt is continuing nonstop at full speed,” Graser told reporters.
He said police had no information about a possible motive. Asked about terrorism, Graser said:
“the fact that the rave was already winding down suggests that’s not the case. A fight could also be a possibility.”
The latest police update has since narrowed the working theory to a single perpetrator. However, investigators are still examining the suspect’s background, the sequence of events, the circumstances surrounding the attack and the motive.
Public shootings of this kind are relatively uncommon in Switzerland despite comparatively widespread civilian gun ownership. Graser described the Aarau incident as highly unusual.
“In terms of its nature, this incident is certainly unique in recent years,” he said. “We don’t yet know the full extent of it, but based purely on the circumstances, it is something truly extraordinary. That’s why there’s such a large police presence.”
Authorities have not said whether the arrested man knew any of the victims or whether the shooting followed a personal dispute. They have also not released details explaining how the attack was allegedly carried out.
Aargau Cantonal Police said no further information will be released before a scheduled media conference on Wednesday, September 2, at 2 p.m. at the Mobile Police facility in Schafisheim.
For now, the arrest marks a major turning point in a case that began with a night of music and ended in devastating violence, leaving one young woman dead, five people injured and investigators searching for the reason behind the gunfire.
