Is There a Free Demo?

Yes, and it is live right now. Nintendo released the “Welcome Version” free demo on the Nintendo eShop on March 25, 2026.

Here is what the demo includes:

  • Create up to three Mii characters and start building your island
  • Your save data transfers directly to the full game on April 16, so nothing you build goes to waste
  • Completing the demo rewards you with a hamster costume for your Miis, which carries over into the full version

The demo is a genuine slice of the experience rather than a limited teaser, so it is well worth downloading if you are on the fence.

What Platform Does It Run On?

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launches on Nintendo Switch. The single release is compatible with both the original Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2. However, Nintendo has not announced a dedicated Switch 2 version, and the game does not include any unique performance boosts or feature enhancements on Switch 2 hardware.

What Is Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream About?

You build an island, populate it with Mii characters based on whoever you like, and then watch what unfolds as they form friendships, bicker, fall in love, and get up to all kinds of absurd situations. Time in the game runs in real time, so checking in daily keeps your island active and evolving.

How Do You Create Mii Characters?

Nintendo confirmed two creation methods in the game:

“Get Help” walks you through guided questions about facial features, hairstyle, and expression, then generates a Mii based on your answers for you to review and tweak.

“From Scratch” gives you full manual control over every feature, including face shape, hairstyle, eyebrows, and more. The Face Paint tool also lets you add stamped or hand-drawn details for more creative Miis.

Once the look is set, you customise each Mii’s name, height, body type, gender, voice, energy levels, quirkiness, favourite catchphrases, and personality quirks. These details directly shape how each Mii behaves and interacts on your island.

What Inclusivity Options Does the Game Include?

This is one of the most significant upgrades over the 3DS original. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream introduces several long-requested inclusivity features:

  • Same-sex relationships are fully supported, addressing a notable absence from the 3DS version
  • Non-binary gender options and flexible pronoun settings are available during Mii setup
  • Detailed dating preferences are included, covering asexual and aromantic options
  • Romantic relationship paths are appropriately locked for certain Mii configurations, such as parent and child relationships

What Are the Main Features Confirmed So Far?

Island Shops and Facilities

Nintendo confirmed the following locations on your island at launch:

Shop / FacilityWhat It Does
Fresh KingdomFood mart — discover each Mii’s favourite meals
Where & WearClothing — everyday and unusual outfits
T&C RenoHome supply — room themes including a supermarket and a library bedroom
MarketplaceRotating stock that changes depending on the time of day
Quik BuildLandscape items such as benches, trees, and vending machines
MNN News StationKeeps you updated on island events and Mii activity
Foto-Tomo PhotographyStage and capture photo moments for your Miis

Palette House Workshop

The Palette House Workshop is the game’s dedicated creative space. Here you can design and build your own pets, custom drinks, TV shows for Miis to watch, clothing decorations, house exteriors, ground tile designs, and entirely original items to scatter across your island. You can gift creations directly to residents or use them as island decorations.

Roommates and Relationships

You can move up to eight Miis into a shared living space as roommates. Living together changes how they interact, and unpredictable situations develop with multiple personalities under one roof. Friendships and relationships form naturally once Miis are acquainted, though you can speed things along by picking up one Mii and dropping them near another to make an introduction.

Local Wireless Sharing

Using the local wireless feature, you and friends can send each other Miis and items created at Palette House. This requires multiple systems and game copies and works locally rather than online.

What Are Critics Saying?

Early previews point to a charming, relaxed experience that expands meaningfully on the 3DS original. The strongest praise focuses on the creativity tools, the absurdist humour, and how easy the game is to pick up and enjoy without pressure. However, several outlets raised the same honest question: how much staying power will it have once the initial novelty settles?

The general verdict is that Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream rewards players who invest time and imagination into it. Those looking for a structured progression or a goal-driven loop may find the freeform nature a little light. However, for anyone after something relaxing and genuinely funny to return to daily, previews suggest it delivers well.
