When you look at ARC Raiders, it feels built for drop in play. Shared worlds, tense firefights, and constant online interaction define the experience. That design leads many PlayStation players to ask a practical question before committing. Do you need PlayStation Plus to play ARC Raiders, or can you jump in without a subscription?
The short answer is yes. On PlayStation, ARC Raiders requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription to play.
The longer answer explains why this requirement exists and what exceptions do not apply here.
Why ARC Raiders Requires PlayStation Plus
ARC Raiders is an online multiplayer extraction shooter. Every session connects you to shared servers, other players, and persistent progression systems. Sony treats this type of game as paid online multiplayer.
Because of that classification, PlayStation Plus becomes mandatory for access. Sony applies this rule across nearly all paid online games, regardless of whether they include a single player mode.
ARC Raiders does not offer an offline or solo only experience that bypasses online infrastructure. You play online by design, which places it squarely behind the PlayStation Plus paywall.
The Free to Play Exception Does Not Apply
Many players assume that all online games avoid PlayStation Plus fees. That only applies to free to play titles.
Games like Fortnite, Warframe, and Apex Legends allow online play without PlayStation Plus because Sony exempts free to play releases from the subscription requirement.
ARC Raiders is not free to play. Even if the store page looked unfinished during early tests, the final release follows Sony’s standard rules. Once the game launched as a paid title, PlayStation Plus became required for online access.
Why Some Players Felt Confused Early On
During technical tests and limited betas, some players accessed ARC Raiders without PlayStation Plus. That created mixed expectations.
Beta builds sometimes bypass subscription checks. Sony allows this to lower friction during testing phases. These exceptions do not carry over to full releases.
Once ARC Raiders entered its official launch state, the PlayStation Store listing clearly marked PlayStation Plus as required for online play.
What Happens Without PlayStation Plus
If you try to launch ARC Raiders on PlayStation without an active subscription, the game will block online access. Since the game relies entirely on online connectivity, you will not reach the core gameplay loop.
This situation mirrors other online only titles on PlayStation. Without PlayStation Plus, ownership alone does not grant access.
How This Compares to PC and Other Platforms
On PC, ARC Raiders does not require any subscription. You connect directly through the platform’s online services without a recurring fee.
Xbox players face a similar structure to PlayStation. Microsoft requires Game Pass Core for paid online multiplayer titles, which places ARC Raiders behind a subscription there as well.
This difference explains why some players choose PC for extraction shooters. Console ecosystems attach recurring costs to online play that PC platforms avoid.
Is the Subscription Worth It for ARC Raiders?
That depends on how you play.
If ARC Raiders becomes a long term game for you, PlayStation Plus unlocks uninterrupted access and added benefits like cloud saves and monthly games. If you only planned to drop in casually, the extra cost may feel harder to justify.
The important part is clarity before purchase. ARC Raiders does not surprise you later. The requirement stays consistent once you understand Sony’s rules.
