Voltorb is one of the more unusual Pokémon you can attract in Pokémon Pokopia, and getting it to show up takes a little more thought than simply exploring the map. Rather than appearing randomly in the wild, Voltorb requires a specific habitat setup before it will spawn in your world. The good news is that there are two ways to do it, one more involved and one surprisingly simple. Here is everything you need to know.

What Does Voltorb Do in Pokémon Pokopia?

Voltorb brings two specialties to your island that make it genuinely useful beyond just filling out your Pokédex.

Generate is a utility specialty that allows Voltorb to produce electricity, powering lights, machines, and charge stations in your world. If you plan to build anything that requires electrical power, Voltorb is one of the Pokémon you will want attracting to your island.

Explode is a building specialty that lets you stuff Voltorb or Electrode inside a cannon barrel, aim it, and launch them directly at large rocks, structures, or obstacles. They explode on impact and clear a much bigger area than standard demolition, making Voltorb an extremely practical tool for rapid expansion and obstacle clearing.

Pro Tip: Buy Habitat Hints First

Before gathering any materials, visit any restored Pokémon Center PC terminal and purchase Habitat Hints from the shop using in-game coins. This instantly reveals the exact item requirements for both the Park Bench and Playing Pirate habitats, along with every other habitat in the game, without any trial and error. It is highly recommended for early-game players and can save a significant amount of time.

How to Unlock Voltorb: Both Methods

Voltorb visits two different habitat types in Pokémon Pokopia. Both habitats work in any area, at any time of day, and in any weather. You can use either one depending on how much time and resources you want to invest.

Method 1: Park Bench Habitat (Simple)

The quickest way to attract Voltorb requires just two items placed together in your habitat area. This method bypasses all ship exploration and crafting entirely.

Items required:

  • 1 Garbage Bin
  • 1 Seat (wide)

Place the garbage bin next to the wide seat and wait for the spawn cycle. This urban-style setup reflects the kind of environment Voltorb traditionally gravitates toward in Pokémon lore, and it works just as effectively as the more complex method. Additionally, the Park Bench habitat also attracts Zubat alongside Voltorb and Electrode, making it a nice bonus for early-game players looking to fill out their Pokédex.

This is the recommended starting point if you want Voltorb early without a significant resource investment.

Method 2: Playing Pirate Habitat (Full Setup)

The Playing Pirate habitat is the more involved option and requires items sourced from the Bleak Beach region, including crafted components. However, it also attracts Electrode alongside Voltorb, making it a rewarding long-term habitat.

Items required:

  • 2 Cannons
  • 2 Barrels
  • 1 Ship’s Wheel

Step-by-Step: How to Build the Playing Pirate Habitat

Step 1: Complete the Bleak Beach Main Story

Progress through the Bleak Beach storyline until you finish the region’s main objectives, specifically the Pokémon Center restoration quest line. Completing this unlocks the Cannon blueprint automatically. Cannons cannot be crafted before this point.

Step 2: Gather Crafting Materials

Before crafting the Cannons, collect the required resources from exploration zones across the island. Cannon crafting requires Iron Ingots, Lumber, and Vine Rope. Once the blueprint is unlocked, Cannons can be crafted at any workbench.

Step 3: Craft Two Cannons

Use the unlocked blueprint at any workbench to craft two Cannons. Make sure you have enough materials prepared before starting.

Step 4: Travel to the Bleak Beach Shipwreck

Head to the large shipwreck located offshore in Bleak Beach. This ship is the primary source of the remaining habitat items you need.

Step 5: Collect Two Barrels

Enter the ship and explore the lower deck. Two barrels are located here and can be collected for use in the habitat.

Step 6: Collect the Ship’s Wheel

Climb to the upper section of the ship and locate the ship’s wheel. Interact with it to pick it up.

Step 7: Assemble the Habitat

Return to your building area and place all five items together in the same habitat layout:

  • 2 Cannons
  • 2 Barrels
  • 1 Ship’s Wheel

Once placed correctly, the Playing Pirate habitat becomes active.

Step 8: Wait for Voltorb to Spawn

After assembling the habitat, wait for the spawning cycle. Voltorb will appear intermittently rather than instantly. However, you can skip the wait entirely using Honey, as detailed in the section below.

Which Method Should You Use?

EaseVery easyMedium difficulty
Resources neededMinimalIron Ingots, Lumber, Vine Rope + exploration
Story progress requiredNoYes (Bleak Beach completion)

Best forEarly game / quick setupLong-term habitat building

If you want Voltorb as quickly as possible, the Park Bench method is the clear choice. However, if you are further into the game and want a more thematic setup that doubles as a feature for your island, the Playing Pirate habitat is worth building.

Additionally, once Voltorb has moved into a habitat, you can fully disassemble it and recover all items at 100% to reuse elsewhere. Only one Pokémon can occupy a single habitat instance at a time, so this flexibility is useful when reorganising your island.

How to Keep Voltorb Happy

Once Voltorb is part of your habitat, keeping its comfort level high improves its productivity and spawn reliability. Voltorb’s ideal habitat condition is Bright, and several factors contribute to better performance:

  • Place liked items nearby including electronics, shiny items, round items, colorful items, spinning items, and bitter-flavored objects
  • Keep the overall Environment Level of the region as high as possible, since higher environment levels lead to faster and more reliable spawns
  • Higher comfort levels directly improve Generate output, meaning more power for your lights and machines, and stronger Explode performance for demolition

How to Find and Catch Voltorb After It Spawns

Once your habitat is built, there are two reliable ways to get Voltorb to appear without simply waiting.

Use Honey for an Instant Spawn

Apply Honey directly to the completed habitat and Voltorb will appear immediately rather than waiting for the random spawn cycle. You can obtain Honey from Combee rewards, random flower drops, or by farming it reliably from a befriended Combee.

Use the Pokédex Direction Trick

If Voltorb has spawned but wandered off or is hard to locate, open your Pokédex, hover over Voltorb, and press the plus button on the right Joy-Con. Confirm the action and then speak to any nearby befriended Pokémon. They will turn and point in the exact direction of the missing Voltorb, making it easy to track down even if it has drifted away from the habitat area.

Once you locate Voltorb, interact with it to initiate the encounter and complete the capture.

  • Use the Pokédex direction trick with a befriended Pokémon to locate a wandering Voltorb quickly.
  • Voltorb’s ideal habitat condition is Bright, and it prefers electronics, round items, and spinning items nearby.
  • Habitats can be fully disassembled after use with all items recovered at 100%.
