In The Outer Worlds 2, the Commander’s Safe is one of the first locked containers you’ll find on your ship, The Incognito. It may look simple, but figuring out how to open it can be confusing at first. This guide explains, in clear and easy steps, how to find the Commander’s Safe Key, how to unlock the safe, and what rewards you’ll get for doing it.

What is the Commander’s Safe

The Commander’s Safe is found in your personal quarters on The Incognito. You’ll see it after you wake up from cryo sleep, near your desk and the Moon Man bobblehead. Even though it belongs to you, it stays locked until you find the key or improve your Lockpick skill.

This safe is part of a small side story on your ship. It gives you both useful items and a bit of humor that fits well with the game’s tone.

How to Get the Commander’s Safe Key

Step 1: Read the Crumpled List

Next to the safe on the floor is a small note called the Crumpled List. When you read it, you’ll see that Niles, one of your shipmates, wrote a reminder saying to “hide the safe key with VAL.” This gives you the first clue about where to look.

Step 2: Talk to VAL (V.A.L.E.R.I.E.)

After reading the note, go and talk to VAL, your ship’s AI assistant. Ask her about the key to the Commander’s Safe. VAL will tell you that Niles asked her to hide it somewhere he couldn’t find it. She then hints that it is behind the Skip Drive at the back of the ship.

Step 3: Search Behind the Engine

Now head to the Engine Room. It’s located behind the main conference area where you first met Agent De Vries. Move to the back of the room, crouch under some pipes, and look behind the large Skip Drive. You’ll see a small key on the floor between two railings. This is the Commander’s Safe Key. Pick it up and it will automatically be added to your quest items.

Alternate Way: Use Lockpick Skill

If you don’t want to search for the key, you can still open the safe with the right skills.

  • You need Lockpick Level 4
  • You must have 1 Mag-Pick in your inventory

This option gives the same rewards, but you’ll miss out on the short story moment with VAL and Niles.

What’s Inside the Commander’s Safe?

Once you unlock the safe, you’ll find several useful items:

ItemQuantityDescription
Tossball Card: Eva Wierzbicki1Gives +1 Toxicity Crash Threshold for better healing.
Bit Cartridge1 (around 320 Bits)Money used in Halcyon.
Bypass Shunt2Used for hacking terminals.
Mag-Pick2Used for opening locked containers.
Numb Rum2Small health recovery item.
Ascendant Bourbon1Rare collectible drink.
Spectrum Vodka1Common drink with minor healing effect.

VAL will mention that Niles put the alcohol inside to help him “quit drinking.” It’s a small but funny detail that adds personality to the game.

Tips

  • The Commander’s Safe Key is a quest item, so you cannot sell, drop, or dismantle it.
  • If VAL does not mention the key yet, progress through the story and come back later.
  • The Engine Room becomes fully accessible after finishing the Horizon Point Station mission.
  • Opening the safe with Lockpick skill works the same, but talking to VAL adds more story context.
