Nintendo Is Ending Game Vouchers After January 30

Nintendo has confirmed that January 30 marks the final day you can buy Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers. The program, which offered a rare way to save on first party digital games, will not accept new purchases after 11:59 PM Pacific Time. While the announcement arrived months ago, the deadline now sits close enough to matter.

If you play on Switch or Switch 2, this shift changes how you plan your purchases moving forward.

What Game Vouchers Actually Offered

Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers allowed you to buy two eligible digital games for $100. Since most first party releases cost $60, the program cut the effective price by $10 per game. You needed an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, but for regular players, the math made sense.

The vouchers worked only on select Nintendo published titles through the eShop. They never applied to third party games or physical copies. Even with limits, they became one of Nintendo’s few consistent discounts.

The Deadline and What Still Works

You can buy Game Vouchers until January 30, 2026. After that, sales stop completely.

If you already own vouchers, Nintendo will honor them. Each voucher remains valid for twelve months from the purchase date. A pair bought on January 30 stays usable until January 30, 2027. You can still redeem them as long as your Nintendo Switch Online subscription stays active.

Nintendo will not extend the program or refresh the eligible game list.

Switch 2 Games and a Key Limitation

Game Vouchers do not work on native Nintendo Switch 2 games. That restriction stands firm.

However, you can still use vouchers on original Switch titles that receive Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs. Games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends Z-A fall into this category. You redeem the voucher for the base Switch version, then purchase the upgrade separately.

This workaround matters if you plan to transition slowly to Switch 2 while still saving money where possible.

Why Nintendo Is Ending the Program

Nintendo has not provided a detailed explanation, but the timing offers clues. Switch 2 launched at a higher price point, and Nintendo has shown less flexibility on digital pricing in recent years. Ending Game Vouchers removes a predictable discount path for first party games.

With hardware costs under pressure and console sales softer than expected in late 2025, Nintendo appears focused on stabilizing revenue rather than expanding consumer perks.

What Comes Next for Discounts

Once Game Vouchers disappear, Nintendo offers no equivalent replacement. Digital discounts on first party games remain rare and inconsistent. Physical copies and retail promotions may become the only reliable way to save.

For you, this means planning ahead. If there are two eligible games you already know you want, buying vouchers before January 30 still makes sense. After that, patience and price tracking matter more than ever.
