The Dark Necklace looks like a simple follower trinket at first glance, but its description hints at something deeper. The game does not tell you what it unlocks, yet veteran players know it carries one of the most unusual rewards in Cult of the Lamb. If you want to understand its true purpose or you worry about losing your chance to use it, here is everything the Dark Necklace actually does and how to handle it correctly.
The Dark Necklace’s Uses
The Dark Necklace does nothing when worn by a follower during daily cult life. Its real purpose appears only when you sacrifice the follower who wears it during the Sacrifice Ritual.
When you perform this ritual, the follower vanishes permanently and Aym appears in their place as a new follower. Aym becomes part of your cult and inherits the traits of the follower you sacrificed.
This transformation only happens in the ritual room. Any other method of death does not trigger the effect.
When the Dark Necklace Does Not Work
Players often lose the benefit of the Dark Necklace by sacrificing the wrong way or at the wrong time. These situations prevent Aym from appearing:
1. Sacrificing a follower to open a dungeon door
If you use the follower with the Dark Necklace to open an Anchordeep door, the game consumes the follower but does not spawn Aym. Door sacrifices never activate the necklace’s unique effect.
2. The follower dies from normal causes
If the follower dies from illness, old age, or combat, the effect does not trigger.
3. The follower dies in a ritual other than the Sacrifice Ritual
Only the standard Sacrifice Ritual counts. Everything else breaks the chain.
Can You Recover the Necklace If You Lose It?
Yes. If the follower dies in a way that does not create Aym, you can earn another Dark Necklace the same way you obtained the first one.
You trade a God Tear at the Mystic Seller’s spin wheel, which gives you another chance at receiving the necklace.
If you resurrect a follower who previously wore the Dark Necklace, they return with it equipped.
Special Interaction: The One Who Waits
If you give the Dark Necklace to The One Who Waits and sacrifice them, they can still be resurrected afterward, and you can retrieve the necklace.
However, you cannot create a second Aym, even if you repeat the ritual.
When You Should Use the Dark Necklace
Because it destroys the follower permanently, choose a follower whose traits you want Aym to inherit.
Aym becomes a stable member of your cult, so giving the necklace to someone with strong or positive traits creates a more useful version of Aym.
