The White Crow’s Letter in Crimson Desert unlocks the Abyss Nexus fast travel network across the continent of Pywel, and you can collect it as early as Chapter 2 in Hernand Town.
The White Crow’s Letter looks like a simple collectible at first glance, but it actually introduces one of the most important systems in the game. Collecting it and reading it reveals hidden Nexus fast travel points across the entire map, saving you enormous amounts of travel time in later chapters. Here is everything you need to know.

What the White Crow’s Letter Does
The White Crow’s Letter acts as your formal introduction to the Abyss Nexus fast travel system. It explains that Nexus points are scattered across Pywel, hidden from view until you reveal them using your lantern or Blinding Flash ability. Once revealed, activating a Nexus point is as simple as standing on it. After activation, the point becomes permanently selectable on your map for instant fast travel.

After reading the letter, white “?” circles will appear on your map in explorable areas, indicating potential Nexus locations waiting to be found and activated. However, it is worth noting that not every white “?” circle on the map represents a fast travel Nexus point. Some indicate other exploration challenges such as Secret Places or Ancient Ruins. Use your Lantern or Guiding Light when you arrive at each marker to confirm whether a Nexus point is present.
It is also worth noting that the letter you collect in Chapter 2 starts sealed. In Chapter 5, during the Black and White arc’s “The Missing Seal” quest, the sealing power dissipates automatically. You then re-open the same item, now referred to as the Unsealed Letter, which triggers the witch faction quest line. This is why the White Crow plays a role again later in the story. It is the same letter progressing naturally with the narrative.

The letter has no connection to any faction quest, gear system, or vendor unlock at the point of collection. Its sole function in Chapter 2 is to explain the Nexus network and activate the map markers. Any Abyss Gear or faction-related progression is handled separately through other systems in the game.
When Does the White Crow Appear?
The White Crow becomes available as early as Chapter 2, or during the Turnali’s Request quest, once you are freely exploring Hernand Town. Turnali’s Request is the blacksmith quest in Hernand that teaches tree chopping and refinement, and progressing through it naturally puts you in the right area for the crow encounter. You can also trigger it simply by exploring the town freely, but advancing that quest guarantees the bird appears.
You only need two things to trigger the encounter:
- Your Lantern unlocked (available from the Prologue or early Chapter 1)
- Free access to Hernand Town for exploration
There is no boss fight or story gate required. The crow will not appear before you reach Hernand, but once you are there with your lantern equipped, the encounter can trigger without any further prerequisites.
How to Get the White Crow’s Letter: Step by Step

Step 1: Equip Your Lantern and Activate Focus Mode
Make sure your lantern is equipped and activate Focus Mode using CTRL on PC or the equivalent button on controller. The crow’s trail is completely invisible under normal conditions. Both the lantern and Focus Mode need to be active before the faint trail markers become visible.
Step 2: Follow the White Crow’s Trail Through Hernand Town
Once Focus Mode is active, a guided trail becomes visible leading you through Hernand Town. Follow it closely and stay near the trail markers. Moving too far off track causes the markers to disappear, so keep your pace steady and your camera oriented toward the path ahead.
Step 3: Inspect the Trail to Trigger the Crow Interaction
Continue following the trail to the correct location. At this point the White Crow will land on your right shoulder automatically. There is no combat or puzzle involved at this stage. A “Take” prompt appears at the bottom-right corner of your screen to confirm the interaction is ready.
Step 4: Select the Take Option
Press the Take button when prompted. The crow hands over the letter without a cutscene. The transfer is a simple interaction that confirms itself with a brief on-screen notification.
Step 5: Open Your Inventory and Read the Letter
The White Crow’s Letter goes directly into your inventory after collection. You need to open your inventory manually and read it to formally register the Nexus system and trigger the white map markers across Pywel. Do not skip this step since the map indicators will not appear until the letter is read.

What Is the Abyss Nexus System?
| Feature | Details |
| What it is | Fast travel network spread across Pywel |
| How to reveal | Use your Lantern or Blinding Flash in an area |
| Alternative reveal tool | Guiding Light (LB + RB on controller / CTRL + Left Click on PC) highlights Nexus points with a blue glow |
| How to activate | Stand directly on the Nexus point |
| Activation requirement | No puzzle or combat needed, purely position-based |
| After activation | Point becomes permanently selectable on your map for instant fast travel |
Abyss Nexus points are not visible by default and are distributed across multiple regions of Pywel rather than concentrating in one area. You need to actively scan clearings, elevated terrain, and visually open spots using your lantern light or Blinding Flash to reveal them. Once a Nexus becomes visible, stepping on it activates it permanently with no further input required.

A useful pro tip: when on high ground overlooking an area, activate Guiding Light with the background darkened. This makes Nexus light bubbles shine considerably brighter and easier to spot from a distance, making it more effective than the standard lantern in open terrain.
The very first Abyss Nexus is located just north of Hernand Town, making it a convenient spot to test the system immediately after reading the letter.
Cresset vs. Nexus: What Is the Difference?
Alongside the standard Abyss Nexus network, the game also features Abyss Cresset monuments. These are separate puzzle-based fast travel points that work similarly to Nexus points but require you to solve a specific puzzle at each location before they activate. Both types appear on your map once found, but Cressets demand more effort to unlock. The White Crow’s Letter introduces the standard Nexus network specifically and does not cover Cressets.
How to Use Abyss Nexus Effectively
- Keep your lantern equipped while exploring new regions. Nexus points will not reveal themselves passively. Active scanning is required every time you enter a new area
- Use Guiding Light on high ground overlooking open areas. This brightens the Nexus light bubbles significantly, making them much easier to spot from a distance than standard lantern scanning at ground level
- Use Blinding Flash or your Lantern in open clearings and elevated terrain. These are the locations where Nexus points appear most frequently. If an area looks like it should have a landmark, there is a good chance a Nexus sits nearby
- Activate every Nexus you encounter immediately. Since activation only requires standing on the point, there is no reason to revisit it later. Building your network as you explore saves significant time in later chapters that require heavy backtracking
- Confirm each Nexus on your map after activation. Open your map after stepping on a new point to verify it appears as a selectable fast travel destination and to plan your next route efficiently
- Check white markers, but verify each one. Not every circle represents a Nexus point. Some mark other exploration challenges, so always scan with your lantern or Guiding Light when you arrive
- Prioritise Nexus points early in each new region. Several chapters in Crimson Desert require significant travel back and forth between areas. Having an established Nexus network already in place before those chapters makes the experience considerably smoother
Connection to the Black and White Quest Chain
While the White Crow’s Letter itself is available from Chapter 2, the same letter and the crow both play a role in the broader Chapter 5: Guest Unbidden storyline through the Black and White sub-chapter quest chain. The sealed letter you collected earlier becomes the Unsealed Letter that starts this arc. Here is how the full sequence progresses:
| Quest | Summary |
| The Missing Seal | Read the Unsealed Letter and locate the witch in Witchwood |
| Crowcaller | Return to Hernand, investigate the castle infiltration, track the intruder to an Abyss Gate |
| The Crow’s Warning | Gather clues south of Hernand, defeat ambushing enemies at Muckroot Ranch |
| Bloodwind | Chase Crowcaller to the Church of West Demeniss, defeat his men, force him out |
| Secret at the Church | Visit the Orphanage, solve the cellar puzzle to obtain the Dagger of Radiance, activate the Pillar of Radiance |
| Toward the Nest | Reach the Spire of Soaring, solve the tower puzzles, activate the Skybridge, defeat Crowcaller at the Final Battleground |
Completing the full Black and White arc rewards you with a Core Blueprint: Haste, Blackwing Leather Armor, Blackwing Mask, and the Tauria Curved Sword.
