Baldur’s Gate 3 runs on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series consoles, so the absence of a Nintendo Switch 2 version stands out. The hardware can support demanding games, and Larian Studios already brought Divinity: Original Sin 2 to the platform. For many players, the omission feels strange rather than surprising.

During a recent Reddit AMA, Larian CEO Swen Vincke addressed the situation directly. His answer removed any doubt about where the decision came from.

“It Wasn’t Our Decision”

When asked whether Baldur’s Gate 3 could come to Switch 2, Vincke responded clearly. Larian wanted to do it, but the studio did not control that choice. His wording left little room for interpretation.

Larian no longer owns the Baldur’s Gate license. Wizards of the Coast, which controls the Dungeons and Dragons brand, holds authority over platform releases. Without approval from the license holder, Larian cannot move forward with a new port, even if the studio wants to.

That single constraint explains more than any technical concern ever could.

Timing Matters More Than Technology

Some players assume performance limits keep Baldur’s Gate 3 off Switch 2. That explanation does not hold much weight. The game already runs on consoles with similar constraints, and Switch 2 includes features that fit the game’s design, including mouse style controls.

The real issue comes down to timing and ownership. Larian finished its major work on Baldur’s Gate 3 and moved on to a new Divinity project. The studio now focuses on future games rather than expanding Baldur’s Gate 3 to new platforms.

At this stage, Wizards of the Coast would need to commission another team to handle a Switch 2 version.

Could a Switch 2 Version Still Happen?

Nothing Vincke said ruled it out completely. Wizards of the Coast could partner with a third party studio to create a port. However, industry insiders report that no Switch 2 version is currently in development.

If a port were active behind the scenes, Larian likely would have avoided commenting at all. The openness of Vincke’s response suggests that no such project exists right now.

For players hoping to explore Faerûn on Nintendo hardware, the door remains technically open but practically distant.

Why This Feels Disappointing

Baldur’s Gate 3 earned critical praise for its depth, freedom, and storytelling. Many players view it as one of the strongest role playing games ever released. The idea of taking that experience on the go fits naturally with Switch 2’s design.

Larian shares that sentiment. Vincke’s comment makes it clear that the studio wanted to bring the game to more players. The obstacle never came from lack of interest or belief in the platform.
