For years, leaving Hive Tertium was considered a death sentence. On March 17, 2026, that changes. Fatshark has officially announced Beyond the Hive, a free update for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide that takes players outside the walls of Tertium and into the hostile, toxic wastelands of Atoma Prime for the very first time. Design Director Victor Magnuson calls it the “biggest injection of new content in the game since launch,” and based on everything confirmed so far, that description feels justified.

What Is Expeditions Mode in Darktide?
Expeditions is a brand new game mode that fundamentally changes how Warhammer 40,000: Darktide plays. Rather than the linear, corridor-based missions inside Tertium, Expeditions sends squads into the open desolate plains of Atoma Prime, where the rules of engagement are entirely different.
The core objective is to scour the wasteland for Tech-Remnants and investigate sites of interest scattered across the map using an Auspex Scanner. However, the polluted atmosphere means squads cannot stay outside indefinitely. Players must judge when to keep pushing forward and when to call in the Valkyrie for extraction before the environment kills them.

Critically, no two Expeditions runs are the same. Each run features randomised variables, different enemy placements, and shifting modifiers. Every successfully completed excursion also unlocks further missions, giving the mode genuine progression depth beyond a single session.
Level Artist Kaneda described the design philosophy directly: “The risk versus reward is something we really wanted to push greatly. It is up to the players to decide how far they want to take it. It is up to them, not really up to us like in a normal mission.”
How Expeditions Differs From Standard Darktide Missions
| Feature | Standard Missions | Expeditions Mode |
| Map Structure | Linear, fixed routes | Open zones, no fixed routes |
| Enemy Spawning | Wave-based | Enemies wander in roaming groups |
| Objectives | Clear front lines | Investigate sites, collect Tech-Remnants |
| Extraction | End of mission | Player-chosen, call the Valkyrie when ready |
| Run Duration | Fixed | Up to 30 minutes per run, up to 3 areas per excursion |
| Progression | Mission-based | Completed runs unlock further missions |
| Availability | All progression stages | Available from midway through character progression |
New Environmental Threats in Atoma Prime
The world outside the Hive is not just dangerous because of enemies. The environment itself becomes a constant threat throughout every Expedition. Players will face:
- Toxic atmosphere that limits how long squads can remain outside before extraction becomes critical
- Twisters and lightning storms that can erupt unpredictably during runs
- Safe zones scattered across the map, though these offer only temporary respite before squads must move on
- Open terrain that removes the claustrophobic chokepoints of Tertium, meaning enemies can approach from every direction simultaneously
Squads must move quickly, think tactically, and make constant risk versus reward decisions throughout every run. Staying too long draws more enemies, but leaving too early means returning to the Hive empty-handed.
New Weapons and Items: The Dead Side Sanctuary
The Beyond the Hive update introduces an arsenal of new weapons and modified, supercharged versions of existing ones, available through traders in fortified Sanctuaries between zones. The most notable new item confirmed so far is:
Modified Grenade — capable of wiping out all enemies in the immediate vicinity in a single blast. However, the explosion also draws additional enemies to the squad’s location, making it a high-risk, high-reward tool that demands careful timing.
Players gather scraps during their Expeditions and trade them with Deadsider traders at Sanctuaries to access this upgraded arsenal before heading deeper into the wastes. Swagger, a familiar face, returns among the new Deadsider traders in the update.
New Enemy: The Ogryn Pack Master
The Beyond the Hive update also introduces a brand new enemy type exclusive to Expeditions Mode:
The Ogryn Pack Master roams the derelict plains of Atoma Prime commanding a pack of Pox Hounds and Armoured Pox Hounds. Despite being an Ogryn, this enemy is uncharacteristically fast, making it a dangerous and unpredictable threat to encounter in the open wastes.
Key tactical notes about the Ogryn Pack Master:
- His vocal nature means players can hear and locate him before engaging, giving squads an early warning advantage
- He will continuously call additional Pox Hounds to the battlefield as long as he remains alive
- Eliminating him quickly is the recommended approach to prevent the fight from escalating into an unmanageable wave of enemies
- He has unique and savage interactions with the Arbites class specifically
The Threat Behind the Expedition: The Admonition
The story context for Expeditions centres on a new threat emerging from the wastelands. The Admonition, a faction of Chaos cultists, has been sighted scouring the ruins outside the Hive in search of lost Tech-Remnants. Their motivations remain unknown, but the Imperium has taken notice, and that is where the rejects come in.

The open battlefield of Atoma Prime means the war unfolds on very different terms than anything seen inside Tertium. There are no fixed front lines, no clear routes, and no room for the kind of mistakes players can sometimes absorb inside the Hive.
Community Reaction to the Beyond the Hive Update
The announcement landed to an overwhelmingly positive response from the Darktide community. Players praised Fatshark for the short turnaround between announcement and release, with many highlighting that announcing an update and dropping it within days should become the industry standard. The Expeditions format drew comparisons to Helldivers for its open map and extraction mechanics, as well as Deep Rock Galactic’s Deep Dives for the multi-area structure. Many veteran players also welcomed the prospect of mid-to-long range weapons finally having more meaningful combat applications in the open environment of Atoma Prime.
