Roblox remains one of the world’s biggest social gaming platforms, where millions of players build, explore, and connect every day. The company has now announced a major safety upgrade designed to make the experience better and safer for younger users.

On April 13, 2026, Roblox Founder and CEO David Baszucki revealed two new age-based accounts: Roblox Kids and Roblox Select. These accounts will launch globally in early June 2026 and will automatically adjust content access, chat settings, and parental controls based on a player’s age.

The aim is simple: create clearer, age-appropriate boundaries while preserving the creativity and community that make Roblox special. Baszucki described the changes as a step toward building the gold standard for healthy and safe digital engagement.

Roblox Age-Based Accounts Update Overview

  • Announcement Date: April 13, 2026
  • Global Launch: Early June 2026
  • Roblox Kids: Ages 5 to 8
  • Roblox Select: Ages 9 to 15
  • Standard Account: Age 16 and above
  • Platforms: iOS, Android, desktop/web, and console where available
  • Cost: Completely free — no change to existing pricing

Roblox will automatically assign the correct account once you complete an age check or a verified parent confirms the age. This replaces the previous one-size-fits-all approach for players under 16.

Roblox Kids (ages 5–8) offers the strictest protection. Players can only access games rated Minimal or Mild that pass Roblox’s selection process. All chat and communication features stay disabled by default. Parents must personally approve any individual before their child can communicate with them. The app also uses a distinct background colour so the account type is instantly clear to everyone.

Roblox Select (ages 9–15) provides more options with added safeguards. Players gain access to games rated Minimal, Mild, or Moderate. Communication defaults remain largely as they exist today for this age group, but chat features will be introduced gradually with extra protections. Parents can still manage direct chat settings, block specific games, and approve individual titles through age 15.

Players aged 16 and older will continue with the full standard Roblox experience and see no changes.

Roblox confirms that age-checked users under 16 will still enjoy the vast majority of their current favourite experiences at launch.

How Age Verification Works

You can complete the age check through Roblox’s global technology, which includes biometric and facial age estimation using a quick photo, or through a linked verified parent account.

If you skip the age check, Roblox applies the strictest defaults: access is limited to Minimal or Mild games only, and all communication features remain unavailable. Once you finish verification, the system automatically places you in the correct account. Roblox may also recheck ages if it suspects fraud or misrepresentation.

Seamless Account Progression as Kids Grow

The system handles aging automatically, so no manual changes are required:

  • Ages 5 to 8 → Roblox Kids account
  • Turns 9 → Automatic upgrade to Roblox Select
  • Turns 16 → Automatic upgrade to standard Roblox account (full non-restricted access)
  • Turns 18 → Access to Restricted Content, including strong violence, romantic and sexual themes, and strong language

Parents can correct the registered age through their linked account whenever needed. Exact features may vary slightly by region, so check local settings after the update launches.

The Three-Step Process That Curates Games for Younger Players

Not every game will appear for under-16 accounts. Roblox uses a continuous, ongoing selection process on top of regular moderation:

Step 1: Developer Verification

Creators must complete ID verification (or link a parent account if under 16), enable two-step verification, and maintain an active Roblox Plus subscription. This requirement applies only to games targeting the under-16 catalogues.

Step 2: Real-Time Evaluation

Roblox examines how players aged 16 and older interact with the game and reviews user reports to judge suitability for younger audiences.

Step 3: Content Maturity Rating

Every game receives a label — Minimal, Mild, or Moderate. By default, both Kids and Select accounts exclude games that feature sensitive issues, social hangouts, or free-form drawing experiences.

Stronger Parental Controls for Better Peace of Mind

This update equips parents with more precise tools than before:

  • Block specific individual games → Through age 15
  • Manage direct chat settings → Through age 15
  • Approve specific games not available by default (new granular feature) → Through age 15
  • View games their child plays → Through age 18
  • View child’s friends list → Through age 18
  • Set screen-time and spending limits → Through age 18

The new granular approval feature is particularly helpful. You can now allow a younger child to join an older sibling in one specific experience without removing all default restrictions for other games.

Coming Later in 2026: Region-Specific IARC Ratings

Roblox will begin transitioning to the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework later this year. This global standard will deliver familiar local ratings — ESRB in the US and PEGI in the UK and much of Europe — so families can easily recognise age-appropriate content that matches their country’s cultural norms.

Why Roblox Is Making These Changes Now

Roblox continues to face legal pressure regarding child safety. Multiple US states, including Nebraska, Louisiana, Kentucky, Texas, Florida, Iowa, and Tennessee, have filed lawsuits citing concerns around grooming and protection of young users. Many of these cases have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation.

Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman has emphasised that safety remains at the core of the platform, and the company strengthens protections every day. These new accounts build on earlier 2026 improvements, such as expanded age estimation for chat.

Key Takeaways

  • Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts launch globally in early June 2026.
  • Roblox Kids (ages 5–8) focuses on strict safety with no default chat, while Roblox Select (ages 9–15) adds more content with safeguards.
  • Age-checked players under 16 will keep access to most of their favourite games.
  • Parents gain powerful new controls through age 15, plus longer visibility and limits through age 18.
  • Unverified accounts default to the strictest settings until verification is complete.

Mark your calendar for early June 2026 and complete the age check early for the smoothest transition. Whether you are a young builder, a teen explorer, or a parent keeping an eye on things, these changes aim to make Roblox safer while protecting the fun and creativity that bring millions together.
