The gaming industry woke up to genuinely shocking news on February 19, 2026. PlayStation has shut down Bluepoint Games, one of the most respected studios under its umbrella and the team responsible for some of the most celebrated remakes in recent memory. Here is everything confirmed about the closure and what it means.

What Happened to Bluepoint Games?

Sony has confirmed the closure of Bluepoint Games following what a PlayStation spokesperson described as “a recent business review.” The studio, which built its reputation on delivering exceptional remakes of beloved PlayStation classics, will shut down in March 2026. Approximately 70 employees will lose their jobs as a result.

The news broke through a Bloomberg report, and PlayStation issued the following statement in response:

Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. We thank them for their passion, creativity and craftmanship.”

The closure has come as a genuine shock to the gaming community, largely because of Bluepoint‘s consistent track record of delivering high-quality work throughout its existence.

Who Were the Bluepoint Games?

Bluepoint Games was founded in 2006 and built a reputation over the years as one of the most technically accomplished studios in the industry. Sony acquired the studio in September 2021, bringing it fully into the PlayStation family following a long and successful working relationship. The studio shipped no new titles under full Sony ownership.

Notable projects from Bluepoint Games include:

  • Shadow of the Colossus (PS4) — A ground-up remake of the PS2 classic, released in 2018.
  • Demon’s Souls (PS5) — A full remake that launched alongside the PS5 in November 2020, earning widespread critical acclaim.
  • Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection — A remaster of the first three Uncharted titles for PS4.
  • Metal Gear Solid HD Collection — A remaster collection bringing the classic Metal Gear Solid titles to modern platforms.
  • Gravity Rush Remastered — A remaster of the PS Vita title for PS4.
  • God of War Ragnarök — Bluepoint provided co-development support on the 2022 sequel, which received enormous critical praise.

Demon’s Souls in particular stood out as one of the defining launch titles for the PS5, demonstrating just how much care and technical skill Bluepoint brought to every project it touched.

Why Did PlayStation Close Bluepoint Games?

Sony has not provided a detailed explanation beyond citing “a recent business review.” However, the context surrounding the closure points toward a significant shift in direction.

After Sony acquired Bluepoint in 2021, the studio moved away from the remakes and remasters that had defined its identity. Instead, it spent several years developing an unannounced live-service game set in the God of War universe. Sony canceled that project in January 2025, just over a year before the studio’s closure was announced. PlayStation indicated at the time that it was working with Bluepoint to determine the studio’s next project. However, Bluepoint spent the entirety of 2025 pitching new ideas to Sony, none of which were approved.

The cancellation of that live-service title appears to have been the key factor that triggered the business review leading to this decision.

The broader picture at PlayStation also provides important context. Bluepoint is not the first PlayStation studio to face major cuts in recent years. Sony closed Firewalk Studios in 2024 following the disastrous launch of Concord, shut down mobile studio Neon Koi at the same time, and saw Bungie lay off 220 employees before moving others into Sony Interactive Entertainment directly. The closure fits a wider pattern of Sony‘s PS5-era acquisition disasters and its live-service pivot, which saw eight of twelve promised titles canceled by 2025 amid billions in development costs.

What Was the Canceled God of War Project?

The most recent project at Bluepoint was a multiplayer live-service game set in the God of War universe. The game was never publicly announced or revealed, and Sony canceled it in January 2025, just over a year before the studio closure. Screenshots from the project leaked online in October 2025, offering a first glimpse at its environments with a return to the Greek mythology setting. No details about the game’s content, format, or how far into development it had progressed were made public.

The cancellation of this project is significant because it represents a major investment of time and resources that ultimately came to nothing, which appears to have directly contributed to the decision to shut the studio down entirely.

How Has the Gaming Community Reacted?

The reaction across the gaming community has been one of genuine sadness and disbelief. Bluepoint was widely considered one of the most reliable and technically gifted studios in the industry, and the closure feels particularly difficult to reconcile given the quality of everything the team produced. Outrage has centered on Sony‘s mismanagement, including forcing a remaster specialist into live-service development and failing to greenlight pitches after the cancellation.

Much of the criticism has targeted PlayStation Studios for the studio’s pivot and closure just five years post-acquisition.

The studio’s work on Demon’s Souls remains a landmark example of what a remake can achieve, and its support role on God of War Ragnarök demonstrated that its skills extended well beyond remasters. Losing a studio of that caliber, particularly under these circumstances, is a significant blow to PlayStation‘s first-party lineup and to the players across the globe.
