As product recalls continue to make headlines across the U.S., thousands of households are being urged to check whether they own certain Vornado space heaters after officials identified serious fire and electric shock hazards. While the affected products were sold through major retailers including Amazon and Costco, the risks vary depending on the heater model.
The recalls, coordinated with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), involve two different Vornado heater lines. One affects a limited number of recently sold units, while the other spans more than a decade of sales and has been linked to dozens of overheating incidents.

Which Vornado heaters are affected, and why are officials urging consumers to stop using them?
The first recall involves the Vornado VH2 Whole Room Heater, with approximately 7,780 units affected. These heaters were sold exclusively on Amazon.com between August 2024 and October 2024.
According to the CPSC, the heater’s power cord can partially detach from the enclosure, allowing the cord to become damaged over time. That defect creates both electric shock and fire hazards.
Consumers can identify the affected heaters by looking for an off-white unit featuring the Vornado name and red “V” logo on the front. The silver rating label on the underside should display “TYPE VH2”, while the serial number should include the date codes “JUL24” or “AUG24.” No other VH2 heaters are included in the recall.
At the time the recall was announced in January 2025, no injuries or incidents had been reported.

The larger Vornado recall affects more than 255,000 heaters sold by Costco, Amazon and other major retailers
The second recall is significantly larger, covering approximately 255,000 Vornado SRTH Small Room Tower Heaters, along with a small number sold in Canada.
These heaters were sold nationwide from August 2013 through May 2026 at retailers including Costco, Amazon, Kohl’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, ACE Hardware, and Vornado.com, typically priced between $40 and $50. Available in black or white, the heaters stand roughly 12.5 inches tall and feature high, low and fan-only settings.
Officials say the fan blade can detach from the motor shaft, causing the fan to slow down or stop completely. That malfunction can result in overheating, melting of internal components or the outer enclosure, and potentially a fire if built-in thermal safety features fail to activate in time.
Unlike the VH2 recall, this one has already been linked to real-world incidents. Vornado received 32 reports of overheating, including eight fires and one smoke inhalation incident. Costco also issued member notices encouraging customers to check whether they own the recalled heaters.

Although other recent appliance recalls—including Zwilling electric kettles, Ninja Foodi pressure cookers, LG electric ranges, and Oster countertop ovens—have involved burn or fire hazards, the Vornado recalls most closely match the latest consumer warnings aimed at Costco and Amazon shoppers.
Officials recommend unplugging any matching Vornado heater immediately, checking the model and serial number on the bottom label, and contacting Vornado or the retailer rather than attempting repairs. Consumers are also encouraged to monitor recall updates, as affected product lists can expand over time.
