Brother Bilaal Claims Years-Long Dispute Led to $3 Million Lawsuit Against Jada Pinkett Smith
Bilaal Salaam filed his lawsuit on November 7, 2025, in Los Angeles County Superior Court at the Van Nuys Courthouse West, where Judge Eric Harmon is overseeing the case. The lawsuit seeks $3 million in damages for alleged intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Salaam describes himself as a longtime friend and former associate of Will Smith, claiming their relationship spans nearly four decades. He points to his work as an assistant on Ali, a production assistant on The Legend of Bagger Vance, and photographs featured in Will Smith’s memoir Will as evidence of their close association before the relationship deteriorated.
At the center of the lawsuit is an alleged confrontation on September 25, 2021, during a private birthday celebration for Will Smith’s 53rd birthday at the Regency Calabasas Commons in Calabasas, California. According to Salaam, Jada Pinkett Smith confronted him alongside approximately seven members of her entourage, accusing him of revealing her personal business.
He alleges she became verbally aggressive, threatened that if he continued “telling her personal business,” he would “end up missing or catch a bullet,” and demanded that he sign a non-disclosure agreement “or else.” Salaam further claims members of her entourage followed him to his vehicle while continuing to threaten him.

The lawsuit also alleges the situation escalated after Salaam refused to participate in what he describes as a “crisis management” or “cover-up/deceptive PR campaign” following Will Smith’s 2022 Oscars slap of Chris Rock, allegedly through mutual friend Duane Martin. He also connects the dispute to his planned whistleblower memoir about the Smith family and his public interviews.

He claims the alleged retaliation damaged his reputation, finances, family relationships, and physical and mental health, including PTSD and significant weight gain.
Court Has Already Issued Key Rulings, but the Case Remains Active
Jada Pinkett Smith has denied every major allegation in the lawsuit. Through court filings, she described Salaam’s claims as “nonsense,” “false, uncorroborated,” and part of an “ongoing public campaign of harassment” aimed at her family. Sources close to the Smiths have also characterized the lawsuit as opportunistic and financially motivated.
In February 2026, Jada filed a special motion to strike under California’s anti-SLAPP law, arguing that significant portions of the lawsuit targeted protected speech. The court largely agreed in April 2026, striking claims related to media statements, public comments, and a cease-and-desist letter. However, the court did not dismiss the entire lawsuit, allowing portions of the case to proceed.
The court later ordered Salaam to pay Jada $32,836 in attorney fees after reducing her original request of approximately $49,181, citing some excessive billing despite her attorneys’ experience. Salaam subsequently argued he could not afford the payment, stating he was certified homeless and receiving public assistance, though the court declined to further reduce the amount.

As of July 2026, the lawsuit remains open. Salaam has asked the court to compel Jada Pinkett Smith to appear for a deposition after alleging she failed to attend one scheduled for May 20, 2026. Her legal team argues she has already been deposed in a separate but related case involving substantially similar issues and contends that any additional questioning should be limited to one hour. A judge has not yet ruled on that request.
