Samson: A Tyndalston Story is a gritty, 90s-set third-person action-adventure brawler from Liquid Swords, the studio founded by Just Cause creator Christofer Sundberg. The game puts you in the shoes of a man who owes dangerous people more than he can pay, with his sister held as collateral and a debt that grows by the hour. The launch trailer dropped on April 6, 2026, and the game is already drawing comparisons to Grand Theft Auto. However, Sundberg himself has a very clear and grounded view of where Samson fits in the gaming world, and it is not trying to be the next GTA.

What Is Samson: A Tyndalston Story?
Samson returns to Tyndalston, a city that built him hard and never let him go. A heist gone badly has left him owing dangerous people more than he can repay, and his sister is the pressure point his enemies are squeezing. The clock is ticking, the debt is growing, and the only way forward is through anyone standing in the way.
The game is set in a crime-ridden, 90s urban environment and combines close-quarters brawling with weaponised car chases across multiple open-world districts. Notably, Samson carries no guns at any point. Every fight relies on momentum, terrain, improvised tools, and whatever vehicles are available to him. Sundberg has described the main story as roughly 10 hours long, with side content extending the experience to around 25 hours.
Core Gameplay Features
The Debt System: Samson operates under a daily payment quota. Each morning brings a new target amount, and missing it causes the interest to spike, making the following day considerably harder. Every job and every choice either cuts a path forward or closes one off permanently.
Action Point System: Players spend a limited number of action points on missions. Once committed, the outcome stands, with no do-overs and no safety net.
Law Response: The more chaos Samson creates, the harder the city pushes back. Escalating pressure from law enforcement responds directly to player behaviour throughout the game.
Brawler Combat: Samson uses momentum, the environment, and whatever the city gives him to break enemies quickly. The combat is close, deliberate, and built entirely around improvisation.
Cars as Weapons: Vehicles in Tyndalston are not decoration. Car chases escalate into collisions, traps, and close-quarters destruction, with ramming, drifting, and outthinking pursuers all part of the core toolkit.
Skill Tree: The game includes over 25 upgrades across both brawling and driving disciplines, letting players shape Samson into the fighter the situation demands.
Open World With Memory: Tyndalston is divided into multiple hostile districts. NPCs remember how Samson has behaved, and factions shift in response to his actions over time, giving the city a genuine sense of consequence.

What the Developer Has Said
Christofer Sundberg spoke to PC Gamer about how he views Samson’s place in the market, particularly in relation to GTA 6. He described the Grand Theft Auto franchise as something that transcends ordinary video games, comparing a new GTA release to “Christmas for everyone” and the kind of event that even non-gamers pay attention to. However, Sundberg is not positioning Samson as a rival. In his own words:
“There are times when you want to put GTA down and pick up something else. I see Samson as being like back in the day when action movies were 90 minutes long, not over two hours. I keep going back to watching Die Hard and Ronin and First Blood and Rambo. I think there’s a space for us there, and that’s where I want to end up.”
Sundberg also addressed the studio’s challenges directly. In February 2025, Liquid Swords laid off roughly half its development team, a decision he described as necessary for long-term stability. As a result, some of the heavier RPG systems originally planned for Samson were shelved. Sundberg noted that those features could return in a sequel or as post-launch additions, depending on how the game performs.
