Stardew Valley creator Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone has confirmed that the highly anticipated Stardew Valley: Switch 2 Edition will be a completely free upgrade for existing Nintendo Switch owners of the game. The announcement, revealed shortly after September’s Nintendo Direct showcase, has sparked widespread excitement among fans of the popular farming sim.

The Switch 2 Edition will introduce significant quality-of-life improvements, including mouse support through the JoyCon 2 and up to four-player split-screen co-op via Nintendo’s GameShare feature. For many players, this brings the Switch version closer to the PC experience while also adding multiplayer flexibility rarely seen in indie titles.

However, Barone clarified that due to Japanese consumer protection laws, the upgrade will carry a minimal fee in Japan. He emphasized that this cost would be the lowest allowable on the Nintendo eShop. The Switch 2 Edition is expected to roll out in Fall 2025.

The free upgrade policy has been met with praise from the Stardew Valley community, especially as paid upgrade paths have become common in the industry. Fans across Reddit and social platforms highlighted Barone’s consumer-friendly approach, with one player commenting: “This is refreshing considering how much Nintendo is increasing the prices on everything.”

The announcement comes as Stardew Valley approaches its 10th anniversary. Since its launch in 2016, the indie farming sim has sold millions of copies worldwide and inspired a wave of similar titles across the gaming landscape. Earlier this year, Barone confirmed that development of the game’s next major patch, Update 1.7, is underway, though no content details have been disclosed.

Beyond Stardew Valley, Barone is also working on his second project, Haunted Chocolatier, while contributing to other indie efforts, including voice work for Hollow Knight: Silksong. Despite branching out, Stardew Valley remains at the center of his creative output, with its Switch 2 Edition marking yet another milestone for one of gaming’s most beloved indie franchises.
