Losing progress in any game is frustrating, and Pokémon Pokopia gives you two ways to make sure that never happens. Whether you prefer to let the game handle things automatically or want to take matters into your own hands before closing out a session, knowing exactly how saving works will save you a lot of headaches down the line. Here is everything you need to know.

Saving in Pokémon Pokopia: Quick Overview

MethodHow It Works
AutosaveTriggers automatically during gameplay
Manual SavePress Plus to open the menu, then press Minus to save and quit
Save FilesOne save file per profile on the Nintendo Switch 2
Multiple SavesCreate a separate profile on the same console for a second save

How Autosave Works in Pokémon Pokopia

Pokémon Pokopia includes an autosave feature that saves your game data automatically as you play. You can tell when the game is autosaving by looking at the upper left corner of your screen, where a save icon will briefly appear whenever autosave is running.

The most important thing to keep in mind here is that you should never exit the game or turn off your Nintendo Switch 2 while the autosave icon is visible. Doing so risks corrupting your save data or losing recent progress, so always wait for the icon to disappear before closing the game.

How to Manually Save in Pokémon Pokopia

While autosave handles most of the heavy lifting, manually saving before ending a session is always a good habit. You can manually save Pokémon Pokopia by following these steps:

Step 1: Press the Plus Button on your controller to open the in-game menu.

Step 2: Once the menu is open, press the Minus Button to save and quit the game.

That is all there is to it. Manually saving this way ensures that all of your progress from the current session is fully captured before you step away. It is especially worth doing after completing a long stretch of quests, building new habitats, or raising a Pokémon’s Comfort Level, since these are the kinds of activities where losing even a few minutes of work can feel particularly annoying to redo.

How Many Save Files Does Pokémon Pokopia Have?

Pokémon Pokopia follows the same approach as most mainline Pokémon games on Nintendo Switch systems, offering one save file per profile. This means that each user profile on your Nintendo Switch 2 gets its own dedicated save file, and you cannot have two separate saves under the same profile.

However, if you want to start a second playthrough or let someone else in your household play without overwriting your progress, you can do so by creating a separate profile on the same Nintendo Switch 2 console. Each new profile will have its own independent save file, keeping both playthroughs completely separate.

Cloud Saves in Pokémon Pokopia

If you want an extra layer of protection for your save data beyond the in-game autosave, a Nintendo Switch Online subscription gives you access to automatic cloud backups for your Pokémon Pokopia save file. This is particularly useful as insurance against the rare but genuinely painful scenario of save data corruption or accidental deletion.

You can manage your cloud saves by navigating to HOME Menu then System Settings then Data Management then Save Data Cloud. From there, you can check the backup status of your save and download a backed-up copy if you ever need to restore your progress. If you do not currently have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, a free seven-day trial is available to get you started.

Does Pokémon Pokopia Have a Suspend Feature?

Unlike some other Pokémon games, Pokémon Pokopia does not include a mid-session suspend feature that lets you pause and resume exactly where you left off. This means you cannot simply close the software mid-activity and expect to pick up from the same moment.

However, closing the game via the HOME Menu will trigger a final autosave before the game fully shuts down. The safest approach is always to use the manual save option before exiting, which you can access by pressing the Plus Button to open the menu and then pressing the Minus Button to save and quit. This way you can resume your session from a clean and fully saved state rather than relying on wherever the last automatic save happened to land.
