Mega Evolution is back in Pokémon Champions, and this time it sits right at the heart of every competitive battle. However, it does not happen automatically. You need the right setup before the match even begins, and then you need to use it at the right moment. Here is everything you need to know to get it working and use it well.
Game Launch and Current Regulation
Pokémon Champions officially launched on 8 April 2026 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, with a free graphics patch available for Switch 2 players. Mega Evolution is fully active under the current ranked format, Regulation Set M-A, which runs from 8 April to 17 June 2026.
This is the first official regulation for in-game Ranked Battles and will also feature in early VGC events, starting with Global Challenge I in May 2026. Future regulations such as M-B and M-C may restrict or rotate which Mega Evolutions are allowed, so the current availability is specific to Regulation M-A.
What You Need Before You Can Mega Evolve
Two things must be in place before the Mega Evolution option appears in battle at all:
- Your Pokémon must be capable of Mega Evolving.
- Your Pokémon must be holding its correct Mega Stone as a held item.
If either condition is missing, the option simply will not show up during battle. This is why many players assume the feature is bugged when they first try it. The setup happens entirely before the match begins, so double-check your held items before you queue up. How to Mega Evolve in Pokémon Champions
- Equip the correct Mega Stone to your Pokémon as a held item before entering battle. Each Mega Stone is Pokémon-specific, so Lucarionite only works on Lucario, Gengarite only works on Gengar, and so on.
- Enter the battle with that Pokémon on your team.
- During your turn, select the Mega Evolution option through the Omni Ring.
- The transformation happens instantly on that same turn. There is no delay and no separate menu.
- Your Pokémon stays in its Mega form for the rest of the battle with no way to revert.
One important rule to keep in mind: you can only Mega Evolve once per battle. Once you use it, that window is gone for the remainder of the match.
The Omni Ring — How Mega Evolution Activates
In Pokémon Champions, Mega Evolution activates through the Omni Ring, a key item worn by your player character. The Omni Ring acts as the single device for all in-game battle gimmicks. Currently, Mega Evolution is the only active gimmick, though future updates may add support for Terastallization, Z-Moves, and others.
Because everything funnels through the Omni Ring, only one special mechanic is available per battle under the current system. This means your entire team strategy needs to account for that single commitment.
The activation itself sits directly within your normal move selection flow. When you go to pick your move during a turn, the Omni Ring option appears as part of the same menu. It does not open a separate screen, which makes the whole process feel smooth and deliberate rather than clunky.
When Should You Actually Use It?
Timing Mega Evolution correctly is what separates good players from great ones. Since you only get one use per battle, the decision is permanent. Here is a breakdown of the three windows most competitive players consider:
| Timing | Benefit | Risk |
| Early in the battle | Immediate pressure, forces bad trades from the opponent | You commit before seeing the opponent’s full strategy or lead |
| Mid-battle | You respond to threats with full information about the opponent’s team | Opponent may have already built momentum |
| Late in the battle | High-reward clutch potential | Fewer turns left to benefit from the boosted stats and ability |
Most competitive players recommend saving Mega Evolution until you have scouted the opponent’s key threats. However, if your Pokémon is a hard counter to their lead, activating it early can shut the match down before it escalates.
What Mega Evolution Actually Does
When your Pokémon Mega Evolves, it gains significant stat boosts and a new ability on top of its regular one. Some of the newer Mega Evolutions introduced from Pokémon Legends: Z-A come with unique abilities. For example, Mega Meganium’s Mega Sol ability treats all moves as if they are under permanent harsh sunlight, which opens up powerful Fire-type synergies across the whole team.
The transformation is instant, the stat boosts apply on the same turn, and the form holds for the entire battle.

Not every historical Mega Evolution is available in the current regulation. Some restricted and mythical Pokémon remain excluded for now. Below is the confirmed list of usable Mega Evolutions at launch under Regulation M-A:

How to Get Mega Stones in Pokémon Champions
You can obtain Mega Stones through three confirmed methods:
| Method | Details |
| VP Shop | Each Mega Stone costs 2,000 VP. You earn VP by playing ranked and casual battles. |
| Season 1 Battle Pass | Emboarite and Dragoninite are confirmed Battle Pass rewards in Season 1. |
