Squanch Games has revealed that High on Life 2, the sequel to the 2022 hit sci-fi comedy shooter, will introduce a major structural change: a new hub-based design inspired by Metroidvania-style progression. The announcement was made during the latest episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, where Squanch leaders explained how the shift will expand exploration, storytelling, and player freedom.
Unlike the original High on Life, which was anchored by a single hub, Blim City, the sequel will feature three expansive hubs. Each hub will evolve as players progress, unlocking new interactions, collectibles, and side missions. Creative & Art Director Mikey Spano described the approach as a way to merge strong narrative with flexible gameplay:
“We wanted to keep all the Metroidvania elements in the hubs,” Spano said. “That lets us tell tighter stories without forcing players to repeat missions.”
Designed for Exploration and Choice
The new hub model allows players to balance structured missions with freeform exploration. Players can pursue main story objectives in compact sessions or take time to wander, skateboard, and interact with NPCs. COO and Executive Producer Matty Studivan highlighted the benefit for different playstyles:
“If you just want to finish a bounty in a night, you can. But if you want to hang out in the hub for hours, explore secrets, or try side content, that’s all there too.”
Squanch Games has also confirmed that the hubs will include game jam creations—small experimental projects developed internally. This approach means that players can stumble across hidden mini-games, bizarre mechanics, and surprises woven into the world.
Bigger, Weirder, and More Interactive
Beyond structure, High on Life 2 promises more absurdity and innovation. Players will encounter unconventional boss fights, new traversal tools like a skateboard, and returning meta-content such as full-length movies and licensed retro games embedded within the experience.
According to Spano, these additions will push creativity even further:
“By Act Three, the game just goes completely off the rails. What you’ve seen so far is the normal part.”
High on Life 2 Release and Availability
High on Life 2 launches February 13, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC, available on day one with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The sequel continues the story of the ragtag bounty-hunting crew as they face a new galactic conspiracy threatening humanity.
With its blend of structured storytelling and open-ended exploration, Squanch Games is aiming to deliver both the chaos fans expect and the design depth that keeps them engaged.
