Epic Games has introduced an unexpected Yu-Gi-Oh crossover in Fortnite, giving fans a limited-time chance to grab iconic footwear inspired by the classic anime series.
Fortnite players logging into the Item Shop this week were greeted with a surprise addition: a new cosmetic collaboration between Yu-Gi-Oh! and Nike. The latest crossover brings the Nike Air Max 95 “Yu-Gi-Oh! Jounichi” Kicks to the battle royale, modeled after shoes worn by fan-favorite character Joey Wheeler (known as Katsuya Jonouchi in Japan).
The Yu-Gi-Oh sneakers, priced at 1,000 V-Bucks, are available until September 26 at 8:00 p.m. local time. Designed with a cel-shaded finish to match Fortnite’s anime-styled cosmetics, the shoes also feature a subtle nod to the franchise with the Yu-Gi-Oh! logo embedded in the soles.
Anime Crossovers Continue to Expand in Fortnite
Anime has become a cornerstone of Fortnite’s crossover strategy. Previous collaborations have included globally popular series such as Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, My Hero Academia, and most recently One Punch Man. These events have introduced both character skins and unique gameplay mechanics, such as Goku’s “Kamehameha” attack or Deku’s powerful Smash ability.
The Yu-Gi-Oh crossover marks the first time the trading card anime has appeared in Fortnite, though the collaboration is currently limited to footwear rather than full character bundles. Fans are hopeful this could pave the way for future skins of main characters like Yugi, Kaiba, or Mai Valentine.
A Growing Trend of Sneaker Collaborations
Epic Games appears to be expanding Fortnite’s focus on sneaker culture. Alongside Yu-Gi-Oh, recent updates have also brought Sonic the Hedgehog-themed shoes to the game. These limited-edition footwear items follow Fortnite’s push to diversify its cosmetic offerings beyond traditional skins, emotes, and back bling.
In real life, collectible pairs of Yu-Gi-Oh-inspired Nike Air Max sneakers can fetch upwards of $2,000 on resale markets, making the in-game version a far more affordable option for fans and sneakerheads alike.
Looking Ahead
With leaks hinting at future collaborations involving Netflix’s K-Pop Demon Hunters and popular gaming franchises such as The Binding of Isaac, Fortnite shows no signs of slowing down its steady stream of crossovers. For Yu-Gi-Oh fans, the arrival of Joey Wheeler’s signature kicks may be just the beginning of a much larger partnership.
