Sacrifice sits at the heart of Cult of the Lamb. The game blends charm, devotion, and a hint of menace into a single system that asks you to define your flock through sermons, doctrines, and at times, difficult choices. Many players eventually reach the moment when a follower must serve a higher purpose. The Sacrifice of the Flesh ritual offers power, stability, and control. This guide explains how it works, why it matters, and how to approach it with strategy rather than panic.

Understanding the Path to Sacrifice

You cannot perform sacrifices right away. The game wants you to build a foundation before you start offering followers to the god who revived you.

1. Build the Temple through Divine Inspiration

Your journey begins when your second follower arrives. Their worship produces Divine Inspiration, which unlocks the Temple. This structure becomes the hub for sermons, rituals, and your long climb through the Red Crown skill tree.

2. Enter Darkwood and defeat the second mini boss

After the Temple stands, the next requirement unfolds through Crusades. Travel to Darkwood and clear the path until you confront the second mini boss. Defeating it triggers a visit from The One Who Waits. During this moment the ancient being grants the Sacrifice of the Flesh ritual and pushes your story toward darker authority.

With this encounter complete, you return to your enclave ready to use your new ritual.

How to Perform the Sacrifice of the Flesh Ritual

Once the ritual unlocks, enter your Temple and walk to the altar. The option for Sacrifice of the Flesh appears under Rituals. The game asks for a set amount of Bones, which usually sits between 37 and 75 depending on progression. You gather Bones by defeating enemies during Crusades.

After paying the cost you choose the follower who will face the altar. Higher loyalty and level result in better rewards because the ritual converts their devotion and spirit into experience for your Red Crown upgrades.

What Sacrifice Gives You in Cult of the Lamb

Sacrifice grants a significant amount of Red Crown experience, which unlocks new powers such as improved health, fervor boosts, and shorter cooldowns for your combat abilities. The higher the sacrificed follower’s loyalty, the faster these upgrades arrive.

However, Sacrifice cuts into your cult’s Faith. The ritual drops it by ten points unless you unlock doctrines that embrace sacrifice as a noble act. The Belief in Sacrifice doctrine, found in the Afterlife category, turns the ritual into a source of Faith instead of a penalty.

Because of this tension, sacrifices work best when your cult stands stable, loyal, and well fed. A careless ritual can send followers into dissent.

Which Followers to Sacrifice

Cult of the Lamb rewards thoughtful leadership, even while you deal in blood and devotion. Good choices include:

  • Followers near death
  • Followers who constantly dissent
  • Followers with low loyalty
  • Followers whose traits conflict with your long term doctrine path

Because sacrificed followers lose their bodies completely, the Ritual of Resurrection cannot bring them back. This adds weight to every choice. Once they enter the altar, they vanish from your world forever.
