How to Win at Arm Wrestling in Crimson Desert

Arm wrestling in Crimson Desert is one of those minigames that looks simple but catches a lot of players off guard the first time. You encounter it during the Chapter 1 main quest “Where Rumors Gather”, and you cannot progress the story without winning that first match. The minigame runs on two mechanics at once, button tapping and quick-time events, and getting the balance between them right is what separates a clean win from a frustrating loss. This guide covers exactly how each mechanic works, the controls across all platforms, and the tips that actually make a difference so you can win every arm wrestling challenge in Crimson Desert from the start.

How Arm Wrestling Works in Crimson Desert

The Crimson Desert Arm Wrestling minigame has two core mechanics running at the same time: button tapping and quick-time events (QTEs). You need to manage both together to win.

Here is a breakdown of how each mechanic works:

MechanicWhat You DoWhat Happens
Button Tapping (E on PC / X on controller)Tap repeatedly and consistently after the countdown endsFills the red gauge and builds pressure against your opponent
Quick-Time Event (R on PC / A on controller)Press when the spinning indicator lands on the white wedgeGives you a large boost in the red gauge
Red GaugeWatch its progress throughout the matchFilling it completely means you win; letting it fill the opponent’s side means you lose

The key point here is that the QTE is the more important of the two mechanics. Missing a QTE costs you far more progress than tapping slowly, so your focus during those moments needs to be on clean, timed inputs rather than continuing to spam the tap button.

Follow these steps once the countdown hits zero:

  1. Start tapping the main button (E on PC / X on controller) at a steady, consistent pace after the countdown ends. You do not need to tap as fast as humanly possible. A controlled, rhythmic pace works better than frantic mashing, and several players have confirmed you can win at a normal tapping speed as long as you nail the QTEs.
  2. Watch the centre of the screen for the QTE prompt. After a few seconds of tapping, a spinning arrow will appear inside a circle. The white wedge on the circle marks the target zone, and it always appears on the left side while the spinner moves clockwise.
  3. Press the QTE button (R on PC / A on controller) when the spinner reaches the white wedge. Pressing it a fraction of a second early, before the indicator fully enters the zone, tends to register more reliably than waiting until the last moment.
  4. Return immediately to tapping after the QTE ends. Each QTE gives you a significant boost, so going back to steady tapping straight away keeps your gauge moving forward.
  5. Repeat until the red gauge fills completely. When it reaches the end on your side, you win the match and slam your opponent’s hand down.

Tips and Tricks to Win Every Arm Wrestling Match

Beyond the basic mechanics, these verified tips from the Crimson Desert community and guides will help you win more consistently:

  • Use separate hands for each action. Keep your dominant hand on the tapping button and your other hand ready to hit the QTE button. Using fingers from the same hand for both makes the QTE harder to time correctly.
  • Focus on QTE timing above everything else. Missing a QTE costs you a large chunk of gauge progress. A slow but accurate player will beat a fast-tapping player who keeps missing the QTE window.
  • Try pressing the QTE button slightly early. Pressing R or A a moment before the indicator visually enters the white wedge compensates for any slight input lag and tends to register the timing correctly.
  • Change your graphics preset to Performance if the QTE is too fast. Go to the Others menu, select the Options tab, open Settings, and switch the Preset from Quality to Performance. This slows down the QTE spinner slightly, giving you more reaction time to hit the correct window.
  • If the white wedge is hard to see, adjusting your video settings can help. Switching to Performance or Minimal graphics, tweaking HDR, and maxing out gamma makes the indicator much clearer on screen.
  • Controller users can tilt their controller at a 90-degree angle for a more comfortable grip when tapping. This also makes it easier to reach the second button for the QTE without repositioning your hands.
  • If you are on keyboard and find tapping difficult, using a pen or a firm object to assist with button tapping is a legitimate workaround that players have used successfully.

How to Access Arm Wrestling in Crimson Desert

Arm wrestling first appears as part of the mandatory “Where Rumors Gather” quest in Chapter 1. After completing that quest, you can return to any tavern in Pywel and challenge opponents independently. Here is how to start a match outside of the main quest:

  1. Find the Arm Wrestling Host inside a tavern and press R when standing near them.
  2. Press E to enter the challenge. You need to stake money before the match begins.
  3. Winning doubles your staked amount. Losing means you forfeit it, so keep that in mind when choosing how much to wager.

Arm Wrestling Rewards in Crimson Desert

Winning arm wrestling matches does more than pad your wallet. If you defeat every arm wrestler in the Hernand tavern, you complete the Hero’s Handshake I challenge and earn an Abyss Artifact as a reward. Abyss Artifacts are valuable early progression items, so it is well worth taking on every opponent in the tavern while you are there.

Outside of that specific challenge, arm wrestling rewards you with double your staked Gold each time you win, making it a useful way to build up funds early in the game.
