The promotional image for Assassin's Creed Shadows: Claws of Awaji shows the two protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, in a dynamic combat pose. Naoe, a female shinobi, is on the left, holding a katana and dressed in dark, hooded attire. Yasuke, a male samurai, is on the right, wearing ornate golden samurai armor and wielding a naginata. They are positioned on a rocky, moss-covered path in a dense, sunlit forest in Feudal Japan, with ancient trees and a mystical, ethereal atmosphere. The game title "Assassin's Creed Shadows" is prominently displayed at the top, with the expansion name "Claws of Awaji" below it. The bottom right corner features the text "Title Update 1.1.1".

Ubisoft has confirmed that Title Update 1.1.1 for Assassin’s Creed Shadows will go live on September 11, introducing a major new expansion, free content, and a wide array of fixes across all platforms.

The update, set to release at 2 p.m. UTC (10 a.m. EDT / 7 a.m. PT), will bring significant new gameplay features including the “Claws of Awaji” expansion, a new free story quest, an increased level cap, and extensive improvements to the hideout system.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Expansion: Claws of Awaji

At the core of the update is Claws of Awaji, a paid DLC that introduces a new island region near Osaka Bay. Players will face off against the Sanzoku Ippa faction, hunt the legendary Fujibayashi Tsuyu, and uncover mysteries tied to a long-lost relic. The expansion also debuts the Bo staff weapon, unlockable through new combat sequences, alongside over 10 hours of story-driven content, gear, and abilities.

Ubisoft noted that Mac users may experience initial accessibility issues with the DLC but confirmed a workaround: rebooting the game after first launch will resolve the problem.

Free Story Quest and Weapon

All players, regardless of expansion ownership, will gain access to “Go With the Bo”, a free quest launching September 16. The mission allows players to earn the Bo staff, originally exclusive to the expansion, which is now made available as a universal weapon type.

Gameplay Enhancements

The update raises the level cap to 100, expands hideout upgrades with 20 new enhancements and three additional levels, and introduces quality-of-life improvements such as:

  • Advance Time of Day through meditation (unlockable via hideout upgrades).
  • Improved scouting that reveals both Viewpoints and Safehouses.
  • Enhanced gear tiers: Epic items can evolve into Mythic, while Legendary items can be upgraded to Artifact quality, extending progression into New Game+ cycles.
  • Project Sanctuary: A new Animus HUB project featuring Ezio-themed rewards and new anomaly challenges.

Technical Fixes

The patch addresses numerous bugs and visual issues, including:

  • Stability fixes for cutscene crashes and quest progression blockers.
  • Adjustments to Nightmare difficulty AI behavior.
  • Resolved issues with hideout customization and character duels.
  • PC-specific improvements, such as uncapped cutscenes and corrected heavy attack input.

Ubisoft confirmed patch sizes range from 12.94 GB on PS5 to 42 GB on PC, with Xbox Series X|S requiring the largest update at 33 GB.

Context and Roadmap

Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set in Feudal Japan and featuring protagonists Naoe and Yasuke, launched earlier this year as part of Ubisoft’s expanding Assassin’s Creed franchise. Title Update 1.1.1 is the latest step in the studio’s Year 1 Roadmap, with additional expansions and free content scheduled for release in the coming months.

Players are encouraged to report further issues via the official Bug Reporter and consult Ubisoft Support for troubleshooting.
