Battlefield Movie Could Finally Happen as Sony Targets EA’s Shooter With Christopher McQuarrie and Michael B. Jordan

Battlefield players have spent years blowing up buildings, storming objectives and surviving absolute multiplayer chaos. Now, the franchise could be bringing that battlefield madness to the big screen.

Sony Pictures is reportedly in talks to acquire Electronic Arts’ Battlefield movie package, with Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie attached to write, direct and produce the film. Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan is also attached as a producer and could potentially take the lead role.

There is one huge catch, though: Sony has not officially acquired the movie yet. The studio has reportedly emerged as the frontrunner after a major bidding war involving several Hollywood companies, but negotiations are still underway.

For a franchise that has already survived two failed television adaptation attempts, this could be the closest Battlefield has ever come to a proper Hollywood movie.

Sony Is Reportedly Winning the Battlefield Movie Bidding War

According to reports from Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures is negotiating to land the Battlefield movie after several major studios competed for the project.

Sony has declined to comment on the negotiations.

TheWrap previously reported that Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Sony, Universal and Netflix had all submitted bids for the project.

So, while Sony currently looks like the favourite, this is not a done deal.

There has been no official announcement confirming that Sony has acquired the movie, meaning the project remains subject to negotiations.

For gamers, that distinction matters. Right now, the Battlefield movie is a major Hollywood project in development — not a confirmed Sony release with a locked-in production schedule.

Christopher McQuarrie Is Taking Battlefield Into Action-Movie Territory

The biggest name attached behind the camera is Christopher McQuarrie.

The filmmaker is attached to write, direct and produce the Battlefield adaptation.

McQuarrie is best known for his work on the Mission: Impossible franchise, where he helped shape some of the biggest modern action blockbusters. His earlier credits also include the screenplay for The Usual Suspects.

That makes the pairing pretty wild from a gaming perspective.

Battlefield is already built around huge-scale combat, destruction and military action. Putting the franchise in the hands of a filmmaker associated with the Mission: Impossible series gives the movie some serious action credentials.

But don’t expect the story to be revealed just yet.

There is currently no officially announced plot, setting, release date or complete cast for the film.

So, despite the talent involved, the movie is still in the early stages rather than being anywhere close to hitting theatres.

Michael B. Jordan Could Star — But He Is Not Confirmed Yet

Then there is Michael B. Jordan.

Jordan is attached to produce the Battlefield movie through Outlier Society, and he could potentially star in it as well.

But gamers shouldn’t start calling him the confirmed Battlefield protagonist just yet.

His involvement as an actor remains conditional and depends on several factors. His producing role is part of the current reports, while his potential starring role is still unconfirmed.

Jordan is also coming off a huge career moment after winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for Sinners.

Should he ultimately step into the lead role, the movie would have one of the most recognisable actors ever to headline a major military video game adaptation.

For now, though, the safe version is simple: Michael B. Jordan is attached to produce and could star.

EA Is Directly Involved in the Movie

The production team also connects Hollywood with the people behind Battlefield itself.

The currently named producers are:

  • Michael B. Jordan of Outlier Society
  • Christopher McQuarrie
  • Jesse Stern of Electronic Arts
  • Carter Swan of Emerald Neon
  • Roy Lee of Vertigo
  • Miri Yoon of Vertigo
  • Elizabeth Raposo of Outlier Society

Jesse Stern’s involvement also gives Electronic Arts a direct presence within the movie’s producing team.

That could prove important for a franchise with such a long history and such a distinctive identity.

Battlefield Has Already Tried to Reach Hollywood

This isn’t the first time EA has tried to take Battlefield beyond gaming.

The franchise began in 2002 with Battlefield 1942, originally released on PC and Mac. Since then, the series has expanded to consoles and PC while jumping between different eras and styles of warfare.

We’ve seen Battlefield explore everything from historical conflicts to fictional and futuristic warfare.

Hollywood has previously tried to capitalise on that flexibility.

A Battlefield television adaptation was reported in 2012 with Fox, followed by another attempt in 2016 with Paramount.

Neither project ultimately reached the screen.

That’s what makes the current movie package so interesting. This isn’t simply another rumour about a Battlefield adaptation. The project now has a major feature-film approach, an established action filmmaker and Michael B. Jordan attached.

The big question is whether this attempt can actually make it all the way through development.

Battlefield 6 Gave the Franchise a Huge Commercial Boost

The timing is also pretty important.

Battlefield 6, the franchise’s 18th mainline instalment, launched on October 10, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

EA announced that the game sold more than 7 million copies in its first three days, making it the biggest launch in Battlefield history.

EA has subsequently promoted Battlefield 6 as the “best-selling shooter of 2025.”

There is an important detail behind that claim, though.

According to Circana’s U.S. annual sales data, Battlefield 6 ranked No. 1 among the best-selling games in the United States for 2025, ahead of NBA 2K26, Borderlands 4, Monster Hunter: Wilds and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

That made history for EA’s shooter.

Battlefield 6 became the first Battlefield game to outsell that year’s Call of Duty entry in U.S. annual sales.

But those numbers should not be confused with a worldwide sales ranking. The Circana result refers specifically to U.S. sales.

For EA, however, the message was still pretty loud: Battlefield was back in the conversation.

Battlefield 6 Is Still Getting New Content

And the game isn’t sitting still while Hollywood works on the movie.

EA continues to support Battlefield 6 alongside its free-to-play REDSEC experience.

October 2026 marks the game’s first anniversary, with EA saying its first year delivered four seasons of content, returning maps including Railway to Golmud and Tsuru Reef, plus the introduction of naval warfare.

Now the franchise is moving into Season 5, which EA describes as the beginning of Year 2 for Battlefield 6 and REDSEC.

One of the biggest additions is Rapid Royale, a new REDSEC mode built around shorter matches and more frequent engagements.

It will launch with both Solos and Trios.

EA describes it as a “more condensed Battle Royale experience built around faster matches and more frequent engagements.”

Season 5 will also add new maps set around Las Vegas, new weapons, gameplay changes and Portal updates. A Server Browser is also planned for later in the season.

There are playlist changes too.

Gauntlet will be removed from the active playlist lineup when Season 5 begins, while Battle Royale Duos is planned to return later in the season.

One important warning for players: EA has said that some Season 5 gameplay changes remain subject to testing and player feedback.

That means features discussed during development can still be changed, delayed or removed.

There Is Still No Battlefield Movie Release Date

For anyone already wondering when they can grab a ticket, the answer is: not yet.

There is currently no confirmed theatrical release date.

Sony has not officially announced that it has acquired the project, and there is still no confirmed movie plot, setting or complete cast.

Here is where everything currently stands:

  • Sony Pictures is reportedly in talks to acquire the Battlefield movie package.
  • Sony has emerged as the frontrunner after a multi-studio bidding war.
  • Christopher McQuarrie is attached to write, direct and produce.
  • Michael B. Jordan is attached to produce and potentially star.
  • Jesse Stern of Electronic Arts is among the producers.
  • Carter Swan of Emerald Neon is attached as a producer.
  • Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo are attached as producers.
  • Elizabeth Raposo of Outlier Society is attached as a producer.
  • Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Universal and Netflix also participated in the bidding.
  • There is no confirmed release date or plot.
  • Jordan’s potential starring role remains unconfirmed.

So yes, the project is moving.

No, Sony does not officially own it yet.

And no, we don’t know who Jordan would play — assuming he ultimately signs on as an actor.

Battlefield and Call of Duty Are Heading to Theatres Together

There’s another reason this development feels particularly interesting for gamers.

Battlefield and Call of Duty have spent years battling for the attention of military-shooter players. Now both franchises are heading toward Hollywood at roughly the same time.

A separate Call of Duty movie is being developed by Paramount and Activision.

That film has Peter Berg attached to direct and co-write alongside Taylor Sheridan, and it has a confirmed theatrical release date of June 30, 2028.

The Call of Duty movie is confirmed to be set within the franchise’s Modern Warfare universe, although its detailed story and cast remain under wraps.

The two movies are being developed separately, however.

There is currently no indication that the Battlefield and Call of Duty films will be connected.

What Could a Battlefield Movie Actually Look Like?

This is arguably the most exciting question for players.

Unlike a franchise built around one specific hero or storyline, Battlefield has always had room to move.

The games have covered World War II, Vietnam, World War I, fictional modern conflicts and futuristic warfare.

That means McQuarrie isn’t necessarily locked into recreating one particular game’s campaign.

He could potentially build a new military story using the franchise’s enormous-scale combat identity as its foundation.

But that’s speculation for now.

There is no officially announced story or setting, so anything beyond the confirmed production details remains guesswork.

And honestly, that’s probably for the best at this stage.

The project first needs to get through the Sony negotiations.

Battlefield Finally Has a Real Shot at Hollywood

After years of failed television plans, Battlefield finally looks like it has a serious route to the big screen.

The franchise has just come off a major commercial success with Battlefield 6, which delivered the biggest launch in series history and achieved a historic U.S. annual sales result against Call of Duty.

EA is still supporting the game with new content, while REDSEC is entering its second year with Season 5 and the new Rapid Royale mode.

Now Hollywood is taking notice.

Christopher McQuarrie is attached to write, direct and produce. Michael B. Jordan is attached to produce and could potentially lead the film. EA is directly represented among the producers. And Sony has reportedly emerged from a major studio bidding war as the frontrunner.

But until Sony actually closes the deal, this remains a project in development.

For Battlefield players, the next big objective isn’t a movie trailer or release date.

It’s seeing whether Sony officially lands the project.

After more than two decades of huge multiplayer battles, multiple eras of warfare and two previous TV adaptation attempts that went nowhere, Battlefield may finally be preparing to leave the battlefield and hit the big screen.

Disclaimer: This article is based on currently available reports and official information. The Battlefield movie remains in development, so its studio, cast, story and release plans may change as negotiations continue.
