What Does the Mushroom Staff Do in Terraria?

Summoner items in Terraria often feel unusual at first glance, and the Mushroom Staff fits that pattern perfectly. It looks simple, carries strange stats, and yet plays a clear role once you understand what it offers. This guide explains exactly what the Mushroom Staff does, how it functions, and why it exists.

The Role of the Mushroom Staff

When you use the Mushroom Staff, it summons a Mushroom Boi minion that follows you and attacks enemies automatically.

Unlike melee or magic weapons, the Mushroom Staff does not rely on direct attacks from you. Its purpose centers on summoning support rather than active combat input.

The weapon itself shows -1 base damage and zero knockback, which can seem confusing at first. These values apply to the staff as an item, not to the minion’s ongoing attacks. The Mushroom Boi handles all combat behavior after the summon.

How the Mushroom Boi Minion Works

Once summoned, the Mushroom Boi acts as a standard minion. It stays near you, moves independently, and attacks nearby enemies. As with other minions, you can summon multiple Mushroom Bois depending on your available minion slots.

This weapon fits early summoner builds, where consistency matters more than raw damage. The Mushroom Staff does not aim to overwhelm enemies but instead adds steady pressure during exploration and combat.

Modifiers

The Mushroom Staff benefits most from the Ruthless modifier. While the Mythical modifier offers a wide range of stat bonuses, most of those bonuses affect only the initial summon action rather than the minion itself.

Minions cannot deal critical hits, which limits the long-term value of Mythical. The only lasting benefit Mythical provides over Ruthless involves knockback, even though the base weapon has none.

For practical use, Ruthless delivers the most meaningful improvement to the Mushroom Staff.

Crafting the Mushroom Staff

You craft the Mushroom Staff at an Anvil. The recipe reflects its fungal theme and early-game placement.

You need:

  • 300 Glowing Mushrooms
  • 5 Mushroom Grass Seeds
  • 5 Shadow Scales in Corruption worlds or 5 Tissue Samples in Crimson worlds

Once crafted, the staff becomes immediately usable and does not require additional upgrades to summon the Mushroom Boi.

A Notable Crossover Item

The Mushroom Staff exists as part of a crossover with the game Dead Cells. This connection explains the design of the Mushroom Boi and gives the weapon a distinct identity compared to other summoner tools.

While the crossover adds flavor, it does not change the staff’s mechanics or progression role.
