Ghost of Yōtei Legends is the free online co-op multiplayer mode for Sucker Punch Productions’ PS5 adventure Ghost of Yōtei, and it builds directly on the beloved foundations of Ghost of Tsushima’s own Legends mode. Rather than continuing Atsu’s story, it reimagines the Yōtei Six as mythical, centuries-old legends told through supernatural retelling. With multiple mission types, four playable classes, and a Raid launching next month, here is everything confirmed about Ghost of Yōtei Legends.

When Does Ghost of Yōtei Legends Launch?

Ghost of Yōtei Legends launches on March 10, 2026 as a free update via patch 1.5 for all Ghost of Yōtei owners. Players in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand will receive the patch on March 11 local time instead. Once the update is installed, a Legends option appears directly in the main menu, giving players immediate access to the lobby and all available modes.

Ghost of Yōtei Legends is available at no additional cost to all Ghost of Yōtei owners. However, a PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online play. As of now, the mode appears to be exclusive to PS5, with no PC version announced.

How Long Has Legends Been in Development?

Ghost of Yōtei Legends was not built after the main campaign finished. Sucker Punch ran a dedicated multiplayer team throughout the entire development of Ghost of Yōtei, meaning the mode grew alongside the single-player game rather than starting from scratch after launch.

Legends Lead Designer Darren Bridges described the process: a core team prototyped and built the multiplayer foundations throughout production, and then when the rest of the team moved over after the main game wrapped, development accelerated rapidly. The mode was first announced in 2025, then fully revealed at the PlayStation State of Play in February 2026.

What Is the Story of Ghost of Yōtei Legends?

Ghost of Yōtei Legends does not pick up directly where Atsu’s story ended. Instead, it takes place many years, and possibly centuries, after the events of the main game. Over time, the details of the Yōtei Six’s reign have been exaggerated and mythologised, transforming them from powerful warlords into 15-foot demonic bosses fitting of a supernatural legend. A storyteller narrates the events as players fight through them, giving the mode a distinct tone separate from the single-player campaign.

Each of the Yōtei Six also brings their own faction of followers, including unique sub-bosses themed around each boss’s abilities. For example, the Kitsune commands a Snow Woman with frost abilities, while the Snake has a summoner in its ranks.

Ghost of Yōtei Legends: All Game Modes

At launch, Ghost of Yōtei Legends includes three modes, with a fourth arriving in April 2026:

ModePlayersDescription
Story Missions212 themed missions across the first four bosses
Incursion4Large-scale assault on a boss stronghold, unlocked after completing each Story set
Survival4Wave and area defense across four maps, each themed around a boss
Raid (April 2026)4 (required)Hardcore content facing the Dragon and Lord Saito

Story Missions

Story missions task two players with working through a series of 12 missions themed around four of the Yōtei Six: the Spider, the Oni, the Kitsune, and the Snake. After completing each set of three Story missions, players unlock an Incursion for that boss.

Incursion

Each Incursion is a four-player large-scale assault on a stronghold belonging to one of the four available bosses. Every Incursion ends in a boss fight against a giant, supernatural version of the Spider, the Oni, the Kitsune, or the Snake.

Survival

Survival drops four players into wave and area defense across four maps, each themed around one of the bosses. Players fight to hold territory on each map. Holding an area activates a Blessing, such as summoning a spirit bear or unleashing fire spirits. Losing control activates a Curse in its place, such as a shadow bear that hunts the team down. Each map has its own unique set of Blessings and Curses, which makes every match feel dynamic.

Raid (Coming April 2026)

The Raid launches next month and tasks four players with taking on the final two members of the Yōtei Six: the Dragon and Lord Saito. Darren Bridges was direct about what this means: the Raid requires a full team of four players to complete and cannot be finished with fewer. Communication and coordination are essential. As Bridges put it, “Mark my words. You cannot win without four players.”

All Four Classes in Ghost of Yōtei Legends

Ghost of Yōtei Legends features four playable classes, each with a focus weapon, a unique tech tree, and gear tailored to their role. However, classes are not locked to their focus weapon exclusively and can use other weapons too.

ClassFocus WeaponPlaystyle
SamuraiŌdachiWidest weapon variety; frontline combat
ArcherYari (spear)Ranged focus; carries additional ranged weapon
MercenaryDual KatanasUtility-focused abilities
ShinobiKusarigamaStealth-focused skills

Each class has its own tech tree, so players can build and customise their character through the gear and abilities they unlock over time. Importantly, if a full group of players all wants to play the same class, the game fully supports this. Sucker Punch confirmed that any single class can handle all the challenges the mode presents on its own, though mixing classes helps players specialise and complement each other.

Difficulty Levels

Ghost of Yōtei Legends includes four difficulty tiers, each offering different enemies, challenges, and reward rates:

DifficultyXP GainLoot Quality
BronzeSlowestStandard
SilverModerateBetter
GoldFastHigh
PlatinumFastestBest

Every mission is fully replayable across all four difficulties. The game recommends a gear level for each tier and warns players if they are underlevelled, however it still lets them attempt the higher difficulty if they choose to.

The Lobby: More Than Just a Waiting Room

Ghost of Yōtei Legends features an interactive lobby rather than a flat menu screen. While waiting for friends or between rounds, players can do the following directly inside the lobby:

  • Browse completed feats and unlock cosmetics
  • Adjust their tech tree and tweak their build
  • Play Zeni Hajiki, the coin-flicking mini-game from the single-player campaign, against other players in light PvP
  • Compete in Bamboo Strike, a score challenge with mini leaderboards to compare against friends
  • Use the training area to practice perfect parries and test builds in a low-pressure environment

Cosmetics

Ghost of Yōtei Legends offers a range of cosmetics that lean fully into its supernatural and fantasy theme, going well beyond what the single-player game offers visually. Sucker Punch confirmed that all cosmetic content is available to Ghost of Yōtei owners at no additional cost and is unlocked purely through gameplay. One confirmed example includes a helmet with eyeballs that move and look around while worn.
