Among Pharloom’s rugged landscapes, the Rhinogrund stands out as one of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s most memorable mini-bosses. This hulking rhino-beetle lurks in the Far Fields and beyond, blocking paths with its massive horn and relentless charges. Though not a full-scale boss, Rhinogrund can overwhelm the unprepared with its brute strength, making it a wall for many players early in their journey.

If you’re hunting down every enemy for your Silksong journal or simply trying to clear the way to new areas, understanding Rhinogrund’s behavior and locations is crucial. Below you’ll find a complete combat walkthrough, attack breakdown, and a guide to every known spawn.

Keep Your Distance

Rhinogrund’s power lies in its straightforward aggression. Most of its moves are slow, predictable, and telegraphed—but they punish close-range mistakes. Keeping Hornet at a mid-distance makes it easier to read attacks, dodge charges, and line up punishes without getting cornered.

⚠️ Tip: Watch your positioning. Rhinogrund often pushes toward the edges of the room, and if you’re caught between its horn and a wall, it can be devastating. Always leave yourself an escape route.

Use Pogo Attacks on the Charge

When Rhinogrund lowers its horn and rushes forward, jump and pogo off its head. This not only avoids damage but also dishes out reliable hits. Timing is forgiving once you recognize the startup animation.

Cross Stitch for a Clean Counter

The Cross Stitch Silk Skill is especially effective against Rhinogrund. Its predictable charge and flip give you safe parry windows. A well-timed counter can stagger the beast, leaving it wide open to follow-up strikes and shortening the fight significantly.

Rhinogrund Attack Patterns

Rhinogrund has only a handful of moves, but each one is designed to punish hasty play:

  • Ram Attack – Rhinogrund charges across the room with its horn down. Jump or dash past it, then pogo or strike from behind.
  • Somersault – After a pause, it flips forward, covering mid-air space. Stay grounded to avoid.
  • Rock Fling – Rhinogrund digs its horn into the ground and sends debris flying in an arc. Either dash behind it or back away to stay safe.

Recognizing these patterns quickly is the key to victory. Patience and spacing will win this fight more than brute force.

Rhinogrund Locations in Silksong

Players need to defeat two Rhinogrunds to complete the journal entry, though there are at least three confirmed encounters across Pharloom.

1. Far Fields – Hidden Room Near the Bellway

The earliest Rhinogrund is tucked into a secret chamber beneath the right platform of the Bellway. You’ll need to trigger a bomb to create an updraft, navigate thorny platforms, and survive a gauntlet of flying enemies before reaching its lair.

2. Pilgrim’s Rest – Blocking the Shop

Another Rhinogrund waits inside Pilgrim’s Rest in the Far Fields. You must destroy its door mechanism to enter, but the bench and shop remain inaccessible until Rhinogrund is defeated.

3. Memorium – Above the Bench

Later in the game, Rhinogrund appears in Memorium, in the room above the bottom-left bench. It’s found at the far right end of the corridor, often flanked by flying enemies that make the arena busier than usual.

4. Act 3 Spawns (Backup Encounters)

If you miss the early fights, don’t worry—Rhinogrund reappears in Act 3, including one near the Far Fields fast-travel station and another in tunnels linking Deep Docks and Far Fields. These late-game spawns ensure you can always complete the bestiary.
